OK...You're a responsible sportsman and gun owner...show it. I challenge each and every one of our Duckboats.net members to get right with responsible gun ownership. If you have one firearm in your residence...purchase a combination gun safe. I know there are many of you fellow sportsman out there that own one, two, three or more guns and they are in a closet or under a bed or in a gun rack in the family room....Do the right thing, society has changed, what kids watch on tv has changed, our duty as responsible firearm owners has not changed...I ask this of each and every one of you..

This message may have been posted by another member in some shape or form but I felt compelled to challenge any of you that do not have a combination gun safe....Accept the Challenge!

Thanks,....Merry Chrismas and Happy New Year,

-Ron

I had this discussion with my usual hunting partner today. Perhaps this is a stupid question, but why combination instead of a key?

Its sad but true. A good safe with a safety plan in place, (only the adults have combo), Would have stopped a lot of bad things lately. I have my big safe with all long guns and my home defense handgun in a one gun safe in the bedroom.

Just after the CT tragedy, I bolted mine to the wall and explained "why" I was doing it to my young son and daughter. Keeps everything safe, for safety sake.

In 2001 I purchased a gun safe. What's not been brought up is how do you store your ammo. I also lock up my ammunition which I think is more important than the gun safe. The inanimate gun will never kill someone if the ammunition is not accessible but you can kill someone with a piece of pipe a 2x4 a rubberband a nail and a 12ga shotgun shell.

Have two.

Im always seeing new ideas or products when on jobs with my dad that i would like to encorperate into my house in the future One time this guy had a safe installed that was big enough to walk into. So im thinking that when my foundation is being poured i can have them make a room with concrete walls in the basement and then get a bank vault or safe door so i can have a room safe. That way theres always enough room for another gun

I own and use a gun safe. But there is a difference between a burglary and a home invasion. A gun has to be accessible to be of use. My boys are grown and gone so i don't have to deal with the child factor. I have ready access to protection at all times,i try to be in condition yellow always.
Bill.

The combo is so that no one can find the the key and unlock it.

I you think you will get invaded keep your shotgun handy, but put the rifles and AR-15's in the safe. Glass fronted gun can easliy be busted into. A combo safe could possibly have prevented many tragedies.

Some gun safes have a combo with a key lock. You dial the safe open, but can lock it with the key so you may reenter with out dialing it each time.
Teach your children about guns, explain to their friends. Let them handle the guns with supervision. Some of their friends have never handled guns or used them. We had loaded guns in the house always. Times have changed, secure your guns. Also keep a gun handy.

My safe has both the combo and key. I never use the key.

The safe is the best place to keep guns when you are not at home. I don't really worry about them being stolen or misused when I am home.

For years I had mine in a "safe" that I welded up and had a key lock, last year Santa brought me a real safe that is fireproof too. Now all is well here.

I bought a 36 gun safe from Dicks a few years back. A good price. Dial lock. It's perfect for not only guns.

My wife and I are the only two in the house.. both have CCP... our arms are at the ready.... not locked .. hidden away.... Just like I grew up.

I posted this same message on the refuge and minnesota waterfowler forums along with facebook and retrievertraining.net

As suspected, I knew the members of this site would mostly have similar views I have on this subject...For those that don't it's your choice...merely a suggestion...but a $500 gun safe can protect $10K worth of firearms pretty easily.

There were alot of responses regarding raising your kids right and it won't be an issue....I'm not worried about my kids...I worried about meth heads and heroin addicts that will raid your house in search of items they can sell quickly. IMHO,...with all the anti's trying to take our gun rights away...why not curtail one aspect of your arms ending up in a criminal's hands. You don't have to lock them all up...if you feel safe with your shotgun or handgun next to the bed...it's your choice, protect your home...but if you have several guns that you only need access to during hunting season...lock 'em up and don't worry about them disappearing.
