Question for Canon Rebel EOS XS owners

My 15 year old son just opened his new camera Christmas gift, and nothing will appear on the LED screen or through the eyepiece. Have tried two lenses, charged battery and check mem card....zero. Menu displays, flash work, but no shutter.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all the duck hunters with cold, wet feet. Ain't it grand!

Look on the upper left corner (above the screen between the menu button and the eye piece), you should see the DISP button. Mash it a time or two until the display lights up.

Thanks Chris. Just tried that and still no luck. Guess we go back to store Sunday for a replacement. This is why I still love my old 35mm !

you may also want to try within settings...
there is a post photo review that can be turned off.
check to see that it is on.

Rich,

It seems everyone is overlooking the fact that you can see nothing thru the view finder. I do not own a Rebel but typically the view finder is "blocked" only when the photo is actually being taken. (the mirror changes position and the shutter fires)

It would be my guess that the shutter or the mirror is stuck and not moving freely. I would suggest you exchange it for a replacement body.

Huntin Dave and all, Thanks for the advice. It looks like a lost cause, and back to the store for a new camera.

This site never fails to amaze me. Lots of talented people and advice. I have to admit that I haven't been an active participant lately. I, too, felt the loss of Lee. And you have reminded me of how helpful one can be. A check goes out Monday for Lee's Legacy Fund. Belated, but sincere.

Happy New Year.

Rich

sounds like the shutter is stuck in the tripped position, take it back and get a new camera. I shoot Canon professionally, once you get a camera that works you will love that camera.... it blows away an old 35mm film camera!
