Question for northern Minnesota Hunters

Hi Guys, I've got a friend who is in his first year of residency of medical school in Maine. He called the other night and is trying to decide where to go after school. He said there are several places in northern Minn where he could go and wants to know what hunting opportunities are available. He is a serious hunter and has taken several non hunting out and got them hooked. He even had a Game Dinner for the other residents he works with. He refers to most of them as the Tree Hugger or Trail Mix type but they all came and enjoyed all the Wild food he prepared. I was basically his mentor (His father doesn't hunt) and got him hooked on ducks. He is also a good deer and turkey hunter.
Any help would be appreciated , John

Does he fish? If he doesn't he better learn to because that area is just too good not to.
Sorry can't help much with the hunting.

Tim

Well John, I might be a bit predjudiced but I think he would be foolish not to move here. Hunting and fishing are a religion here and there is good and bad but there is good deer, grouse and duck hunting to be had in the north of the state and some fair to good pheasant hunting in the southwest. Good luck.
Oh yes, and we have turkeys here too. Have him PM me and we can talk.

It would depend on what he likes for country......Me personally I would head to some where in ALASKA!!! Northern MN does have good attributes.....my wife's family is from Southwest MN and so I have spent some time fishing and hunting in MN, but to garn golley geesh it is flat as a cow pie.....hills not much else....

If I liked to fish vote Alaska
If I liked to hunt vote ALASKA
If I liked wild places vote ALASKA

so on and so forth....

That said......Alaska taint what it used to be

John, I've lived in northern Mn darn near all my life. I bet I could shed some light for you - specifics? May want to PM if you do - some places are beter than others - don't even know you but I bet you know how that goes...

I lived in MN for two years and LOVED IT!!!! What a great place to hunt especially if you are willing to put in some windshield time. The people I met out there were awesome and I hooked up with a bunch of great guys to hunt with.

Damn why did I get that promotion???

Well, the thing about Minnesota is there are lots of game animals up there. No elk, but there are moose (not many). Tons of small game and birds too many to count. The white tails tend to run in herds... find one, you found lots of them... Land access is very simple to obtain. The people are friendly and will even help you find placed to hunt by giving you names and phone numbers of the guys who own the land. I was one of those guys years ago.

About the only sin you could commit is leaving a gate open, or passing someone up who is stuck along the roadway. If you friend is used to the city life, he would think he died and went to heaven.

There are thick misquetos in the summer, but as someone suggested, his freezer will be FULL of walleyes in the summer. Winters are harsh, but that is what is needed to keep the goof balls in other places, where they belong.

When I retire, I am going back there.

Thanks Guys,
I'll give him the good news next time we talk. He didn't get very specific but said there were a few hospitals in that area he was interested in. He did a summer job in Alaska working on fish ladders while he was at Penn State and loved it. He's looking at that too. We should get a lot of time in the blind the week before Christmas so I'll have more input then.
P.S. Don't tell Steve but the early blue bills were right on schedule but they left and we have NO BIRDS here now, NONE!! even the coots left! Thanks Again, John

Dave, We do have elk. Just a few but I happen to hunt whitetail near where the herd is. 30 permits per year, must apply in July, party of two and a cost of $250.00. Not true elk country but they are here just ask some of the farmers in those areas. When you move back give me a holler.

He can PM me if he wants.

I moved to SoDak just for the hunting several years ago and found out its a long time between hunting seasons. Then moved to MI's UP, now I'm in Northern MN. It's pretty decent.

If he likes ruffed grouse, this is the place. If he like fishing walleyes, bass, pike, panfish, muskie, etc, this is definitely the place. Geese have potential, ducks and deer are real spotty but the hunting can be great.

As mentioned, it all depends on what town he would land in and how much he likes to drive to hunt. Could be a great move for him!
