Question for Ronan's users on gunners

I am repainting the side pockets on a decoy I painted with Ronans 1 1/2 years ago. It was hunted in the salt for one season. Durability was not an issue....color was. I never top coat decoys so it's just Ronan's over a Spar Varnish sealer coat on HD cork. So I'd like to just clean up the surface and repaint the offending areas....basically darken the overall side pocket pattern. I'm OK with the pattern, etc. just need to blend in some darker tone..........So can I get away with this or will the repaint just scrub off the well seasoned original Ronans as the decoy gets banged around while being used? Looking for someones actual experiance with this situation. I've repainted my rig several times in the past which was painted with Parkers oil base and never had an issue with the repaint coming off but I've never repainted a Ronans painted decoy.

Thanks in abvance for your thoughts.

I repainted some decoys using Ronan over Ronan. No issues so far, but that was only a year ago. Original paint job was about 8 years earlier. I sanded the entired decoy with fine sandpaper and then used the original paint lines to guide the re-painting.

I think you will have the same situation if you repaint. Ronans tends to dry super flat and is chalky when rubbed or touched. I use it only as a base coat and top coat with either Old Hollands or Goldens. I think Goldens tends to hold up better, is more color fast, and will not fade or rub as quickly over time. That may be the best option for you. Even banging around in the decoy bag, Ronans looks like crap after a while. Is the decoy cork or wood?

i have used it on brant, sea ducks and divers. All i do is spray some clear matte krylon on or a flat clear on them to seal it in. Seems like its lasts for me..Just scuff it, repaint, then seal

OOPS, sorry for some confusing info. It's a high density cork decoy and the originl paint is fine. Did not chalk, chip, fade or anything else.....the repaint is because I am not happy with the color of the side pocket as I originally painted the decoy. I just want to change that color to represent what is closer to the proper color for the gunner. ......so my question was about making sure that the new coat of paint would adhere to the older under coat. I'd rather not sand it all the way off to the cork. I guess I was/am being lazy and looking for the easiest fix. Thanks for the advice given and anymore forthcoming.

yes it should. just make sure that the area is really clean. If you want contact knotts knives in salisbury, md. Thats where i get my ronans from. He knows everything about that paint.

Just hit the area(s) with 220 grit, wipe with a tack cloth or some thinner on a rag, and then repaint. The Ronans should stick fine. Ronans is durable in that it will stick to just about anything. It does tend to scuff and get marked up easily, especially when rubbing up against other decoys, etc.
