Question on refurbishing electric pirogue

I have the boat flipped over, and am wanting to put a coat of expoxy (RAKA) on the bottom to strengthen it and make it more durable. I have sanded it with 100 grit, smoothed out some rough areas, and wiped it all down with xylene. Question - Is this the correct preparations for just "painting" a coat or two of epoxy up to the gunnels, or am I getting ready to do something I might regret? Thanks in advance, pics to come of the refurb process.

What is the boat made of? If it's a fiberlglass boat that gets it's color from gelcoat you are good to go. If it's a painted boat you will want to take it down to the substrate. Also, a coat of epoxy will give some abrasion resistence but it won't add much in the way of strength. If you put on a layer of glass at the same time it will do both. Ask Blake and Rick about the glass job we did on their poke boats. They wore holes through the bottoms dragging them over the RR tracks SCWMA. Once beefed up with glass and epoxy they've held up good ever since.

Hey, are you still working THAAD?

Hey Eric, yeah it is a fiberglass boat, and it is painted. I haven't gotten all of the paint off, but there is plenty of bare places. I guess strength was the wrong word, it is fine as it is, great shape, just wanted to add to it before I re-painted it. It is a cool little boat, but I plan on selling it when I'm finished re-furbing it. Well, I don't directly work for THAAD, we just supply some targets for them to shoot down. Thanks for the info.
