i got out crabbin on thursday which was my 25TH birthday and we ended up with 37 crabs. I ended up going kayaking on friday and saturday with my lady and did a little fishing. i ended up getting up to Petes to glue together a broadbill and cut out another head.

monday was the opening day of squirrel. Nikki has been dying to shoot one for her dog (the lab love squirrels more than life) after a miserably hot and foggy morning on state land we went back to her house. We ended up almost finishing the lap by where her dad keep his equipment and there was a squitrrel munching on white oaks straight ahead. we ran up to get into position and she whacked him.

a happy girl and a happy puppy.

we ended monday by scouting for some honkers.

i knew where the geese were since they hadnt moved since the last time i scouted so i had a few options for the seacoast. i ended up going early to get behind were the geese land so i could push them out away from the houses into open water so i could shoot them. unfortunaly there were people set up close to there and they had no clue what they were doing so the geese became skittish (as if it were late season) and landed in open water (good for me bad for them). i ended up getting on to a pair and the bown man had his way on 1/2 the pair, the other one we will blame on nerves, haha.

since i was anoyed with the other people we decided to leave and see where else there were some birds. all the places that held birds now held decoys. i have NEVER seen so many people out for opening goose. especially in the morning. usually they are in fields and don't move till wicked late. but this concentrated the ones on the river for me so thank you, all you decoy floaters.

i ended up finding 60 geese sunning on a sand bar and knew it was game on. the sun was with us, the tide and wind were not. after a nice leaisurly scull, atleast for the bown man (30 minutes up river) i was 10 yards away from the napping honkers. i kicked to boat so as to increase our swing on the port and counted 1.....2......3......, nothing (i usually let the bowman take the first shot since they are in the premo position), so i said take'm (all i heard was Huh?), to bad so sad. i popped up and utter chaos: birds everywhere. dropped two with my first shot then did some educating. the bow man emptied his magaszine into thin air as if the ammunition wass't his ( oh wait he forgot to pick some up there goes a few bucks). he ended up falling asleep and my first shot woke him up.

now with a new bow man and the time in the P.M., we were counting down our last hours of the opener. after asking if he had everything and getting a snide remark of, "we are sculling, all i need is a gun and ammo" did I ask if he had is liscences. his face went white, "i forgot my duck stamp" i guess you start to loose it when you turn 30. so after calling every post office in the valley he finally held his golden ticket and we were legal.

every place we checked was devoid of geese except the last spot. and it was a 3/4 mile scull against wind and tide, but you are only young once. i could smell the corned gose over toasted rye so we loaded into the float and began the journey. the geese kept moving in and out of a creek so we knew we had the mouth for cover. about 75 yards from the mouth i noticed movement on the bank, there was a lone goose hanging out, in a muffled voice i told the bowman. no sooner did he glance over did the bank become alive with a bakers dozen of geese. my heart started thyumping and the boat began to spin to allow gunning over the port. take'em!!! after the initial volley 3 were floating and there was a wounded goose heading to the creek so we grabbed the paddles and began pursuit.

as it rounded the mouth it was greeted by another dozen so we quikly loaded our guns and dropped back into gunning posture. i gave it a few quick figure 8's with the sculling oar and the geese were within range. they took off before i called it so we got up and droped another 2. after looking dead for a few seconds one sprang to life and headed south, we started chasing and took a good number of shots at it to kill it. by now a pontoon boat began to head our way post haste, (i thought here we go) with the phone to the operators head he shouted, "is it hunting season?" (now if you have no idea what the hell you are talking about usually you dont say anything) but this pompous ass said that is my house there. i said "so" i am legaly far away enough to hunt here and i own just as much of this river as u do. he told the officer on the phone we where hunting and then must have been told it was hunting season. ( i guess hearing it from a cop is different) all this time we were trying to hunt down the last cripple which ended up getting lost.
i cant wait for winter when these people stay inside or go to florida.

after that whole fiasco we got to the launch where a brand new f350 diesel was launching his jetski. the guy hopped out with a camo hat so at least i knew he wouldn't be an anti hunter. as i was going through the boat something was missing. a very expensive shaw and tenny sculling oar!!!

i asked the guy if he would mind giving me a ride to the hunting grounds to look for it. he said hop on. his girlfriend didn't look amused but then again i would sport a grimace if i saw a man trying to sqeeze into a extra small life jacket too, LOL.

i ended up finding the oar and had an awesome day. i hate losing wounded birds nothing pisses me off more, not even some jerk who thinks he owns the river.

how did everyone else do?

sounds like a good day....and happy belated birthday

don't send those folk down here please. There are plenty down here already :)

Damn decoy floaters.....

That many guys on opening day on the river huh? thats discouraging. Hopefully not a sign of things to come for duck season. Maybe I will deer hunt even more this season. Though we are still eating venison and I ran out of ducks to eat a month ago.....

I waited until today to float my decoys. Pretty slow but I did take home the two decoying singles I shot at. It was fun to be out but at 87 F it didn't feel much like waterfowling. Chris, reads like you need to find a sculling buddy who's willing to take a turn on the oar.

Best,
Scott

id rather scull than shoot, to much fun.
o
i think i am actually scullin to close. im thinking more about if i can nudge them with the boat instead of getting a good spread from the shells

Cool stuff Chris. Sculling is something I have yet to try. Love that your bow man fell asleep, that to me is complements to a good quiet sculling captain. Sounds like a typical goose opener to me though. Everyone who owns 4 goose floaters becomes a goose hunter for 2 weeks until the limit gets reduced.
Austin and I got 3 opening morning and have not had a chance to get out since. Should be able to get out tomorrow prior to a wedding back home and then a bunch next week. Good luck.

I put the squirrel tail hangin out the tailgate of her tdi passat. Everyone loves it. Unfortunatly its 90+ here so i dont feel like wearing my brush busters to get a few more. She made a great squirrel stew last year cant wait for more.

Usually no ones out. My buddy who hunts some hay fields skunked too. Once they cut the corn they fly much better.
