Twelve pups arrived on May 12. This breeding is the result of much research and a bit of luck. After several years of looking and talking to stud owners finally a very nice stud was identified by Travis Bruce deep in Labrador territory, Jonesboro Arkansas. One issue I kept hitting was closeness of lines in possible Cassie pairings. Field Goldens are line bred so there is always a balancing act between sire and dam field performance and genetic diversity. When I learned about “Ready” I knew he was an ideal candidate. Ready and Cassie are proven field Goldens with diverse lineage, a highly desirable combination. Puppies are $900 each.

"Ready" is an exceptional looking, medium to dark in color, Golden with a sturdy frame who runs about 60 pounds. He has tremendous drive and smarts in the field but is also a very gentle family pet. One of the aspects about Ready that makes him unique is he is out of the only Golden Grand Hunting Retriever Champion (GRHRCH) x GRHRCH litter ever. There have been about 4000 HRCH, but only 350 GRHRCH and of those only 10 are Golden Retrievers. Ready may very well become the 11th Golden to achieve this high honor. He has one Grand Pass needing only one more for his GRHRCH. In fact two weeks ago he missed earning his GRHRCH going 4 for 5. A pass on the last series and he would be number 11. My money is on him at this Fall’s Grand. Ready is also running at the AKC Master Hunter (MH) level needing one more pass to earn his MH. If that isn’t enough high praise for Ready I’ll add he is trained by Pro Chris Akin of Television’s Team WaterDog fame and hunts with Chris and owner George King nearly everyday during the Arkansas duck season. Ready is very special Golden to say the least.

"Cassie" is quite an athletic Golden who also has medium to dark color and peaks out at 60 pounds. She came to us from Northern California and is one of the many fine Goldens bred by Dr. Lee Herskowitz of Semper Kennels http://home.earthlink.net/~drdawg/ . Dr. Herskowitz’s Goldens are strong field trial competitors and Cassie along with many of her littermates earned high credentials. For her first three years Cassie divided her time between our home and with pro handler Joe Migliore. Cassie excelled in hunt tests achieving her HRCH, a fact we are proud of as relatively few female Golden’s compete in these tests. Once earning her HRCH Cassie returned home and is now my fulltime hunting partner and companion for my three children. As any hunting partner of mine will tell you she is a joy to have in the field as she displays incredible drive for game in addition to being well behaved. More than a couple dyed-in-the-wool lab lovers have had their minds opened to Goldens after hunting over her. We are blessed with such and outstanding family pet and field companion.

I can say without a doubt from many days in the field with Cassie over the last few years that she has as much if not more drive than any dog I have had the pleasure to hunt with.

Her intensity is contagious to any hunt and her disposition is welcomed in any non hunting situation.

I've never had the pleasure, I mean "INVITE", to hunt with Cassie, but I can't wait for a pup!! Are you getting alot of interest in the pups Eric? I quess I can keep them all if you need me to. Give me a call if something comes up or if something comes out! Good luck.

Well we can fix that next season. I didn't get to hunt much this past season so a lot of opportunity was lost.

Actually there has been no new interest in the pups since I made this announcement. Some of the people that had contacted me prior recontacted me to make certain I knew they still wanted a pup but no new folks coming forward. Right now it looks like yourself and two others are guaranteed pups. To be honest I thought more here would be interested, at least I hoped as much so I could see the pups go to good homes and keep up with them as they grow. No biggie though, I'm going to start spreading the word at other sites and places.

Thanks.

What is the going rate for one of Cassie's pups? I can't believe she is already 7 years old! I've been lamenting what I will do when Colby is gone.

Lee

I think Colby wants some company. The pups are $900. If you research the market on Field Goldens you'll see this is a very reasonable price. I paid $850 for Cassie almost seven years ago. I think Semper is getting around $1200 for a pup these days. I want these puppies to go to homes where they will be run in hunt tests or field trials and hunted with reguarly. But most of all I want them in homes where they will be treated like family and loved as such.

Well...I don't do hunt tests and stuff..just try to train the dog so it fetches and listens to me. Colby has company with the Spanish Water Dog "Molly". She is a very motherly pup that Colby probably would'nt miss if she disapeared..she on the other hand will be a wreck when he goes. I agree, that you are offering a bargain for some great pups but I can not commit at the present time. One day I think "get a pup" and the next day I think "God, I don't know if I can take losing another dog". I also think about the grandson and I hunting together and how much a pup he could mature with would mean. I'm in a quandry!

That's pretty awsome Eric. Congrats. We haven't had a littler of pups around here in a long time. They sure are fun. But what I hate is when it's time for them to go. They all end up like being one of the kids. Good luck. I'm sure you'll they'll all go to good homes when the time comes.

Take care.

Showed Cassie and family pics to my wife..we both ooohed and ahhhed for 20 minutes. That is one fine Golden Family. Thanks for sharing the photos. Sure you will put great Goldens in other people's lives. We have a Llewellyn Setter and two Border Collies and a Black Lab living with my Son in CA...otherwise, we would be on your waiting list.

Thanks guys. I just got home from work and can tell after just 3 days they are growing fast. My 3 yo daughter Caroline can't keep away from them. Of course we have to watch her closely as she's unaware of their fraility.

Hi Erik,

Congratulations! I have been busy with work and haven't had time to read the forum in awhile. This looks like a great breeding for a very reasonable price. Lee charged me $1,500 for my Semper pup and our Topbrass pup out of Bro and Paws was $3,000 so your pups are a steal.

I was a little worried about Alex, the Semper pup, early on, but these past couple months he has really turned it on, I cant wait to start running Derbys in a couple of months.

Good luck selling your pups. Are you keeping one? Are any still available? I'll put the word out around here if so.

Regards,

John

I talked to Lee the other night. He is a super fella. I always tease him about when he sold me Cassie he didn't know he was going to have to provide tech support indefinitely.

Thanks for the feedback on the pup price of $900. I think in general field trialers will pay more than hunt testers or your average Joe. Since I'm not dialed in to the field trial game, like you, my sales opportunities fall in the other two groups. Now if a fella, such as yourself, helped spread the word that might just be a huge help when folks learn of the reasonable asking price. Please spread the word. I'd appreciate it.

I'm not sure if I'm keeping one or not. Cassie still has years left in her and I don't know if I want to divide her time just yet. If she was a couple years older no way I wouldn't keep one. As of right now I think 6 pups (1 M, 5 F) are spoken for.

By the way, maybe I just forgot this fact but Lee tells me that Cassie's younger sister, half sister maybe, was the mother of the pup you got from him. Do I have that correct?

Hi Eric,

I know what you mean about the high cost of field trial pups versus local back yard breeders, people in my neck of the woods think $500.00 is a lot. But you don't run field trials and you bought a relatively expensive FT breeding. I did the same thing when I was just running Hunt Test with Cody my first FT pup. Then there are people who just hunt their dog but want the best breeding they can buy, so just get the word out. Have you tried the Working Retriever Central or Retriever Training Forums websites? I see breeding listed on there all the time.

As you know Goldens and Golden owners are greatly outnumbered by Lab owners, and I don't know any Golden people needing a pup right now, but I'm heading to a FT this weekend and will put the word out to anybody I can think of.

My Semper pup is out of Lee's Casey (a Rugby repeat) and a sister to Lee's Cooper who is Lee's breeding and probably the dog you are talking about. If so was Cassie a bit slow to mature, very stubborn, hard to train but ultimately very talented and very-very birdy?

Good luck,

John

Thanks for spreading the word at the FT. It all helps.

I posted an ad at Working Retriever Central last night. I've tried to register at Retriever Training Forums with no luck.

Cooper and Cassie are brother and sister so that means Cassie is your dog's aunt. Lee tells me Cassie was the alpha pup and I can believe it. Cassie can be stubborn but she responds very quick to collar pressure. One nick and she is reminded who the boss is. Joe Migliore, Cassie's pro, didn't find her particulary hard to train. Every dog has their moments and he was good at working her through sticking points. You are dead on with the late to mature and very birdy comments. After Cassie finished pro training she continued to develop. In fact her fourth and fifth duck seasons were real growth oriented. Her boat manners became exceptional and her wariness to duck evasion tactics became very very keen. She also became more at ease with multiple retrieves including mixed marked and blinds. She's at the point now where we are both very satisfied. She gives me 110% in the field and I now seldom need to correct her. Makes for really fun hunts. No breeding will result in overnight success. But a good breeding puts the odds in your favor.

Update. A little over a week old and we are starting to see some eyes opening. They are getting bigger by the hour or so it seems. I'm very pleased about half the pups are now earmarked for hunting homes with several going to duckboats.net members homes. We are thrilled that some of these pups will be regulars here on duckboats.net in the coming years.
