repainting decoys -- advice needed

have some herters decoys that are pretty beat up --- am thinking of repainting them to get them looking more healthy

question is -- when i see ducks fly by -- they look very white - it really stands out

the decoys are flat in color -- so i use flat paint or do you ad some semi-gloss or gloss to your decoys to make them more visible?

is the FME lou sells what you use or do you use another type of paint

is this going to make any difference at all or are the beat-up just as good as the new?

If they aren't already, consider burlapping them when you take on the project, they are much more durable. I only did blue bills and cans so my paint schemes were basic. I just used rustoleum Flat Black and White, there are probably more decoys floating each season with it than anything else. But to get a larger variety of colors the FME is the way to go.

I agree with Bill. I burlapped a bunch of old Herter's foamers... cans and coots and bluebills. I use Rustoleum flat black and white. The basic color scheme works fine for me and makes touch ups easy. My decoys sit in individual pouches so I put some epoxy on the ass end so they don't scuff up in the bag.

Hi George,
Depends upon what you want to do. You could prime them with GAC 200 and paint with Goldens. You could just do the whole job with FME......since it has a mineral spirits base, it doesn't attack foam.

I used to use the FME exclusively but have moved to the Goldens for ease of painting and fast drying. I can teach a full class and we can get a decoy completely painted (and dried) in one day. That can't be done with the FME.
Paint choice has to do with your preferences. Positives and negatives with each choice.

you all use flat paint to do your decoys i gather

i must have had a temporary lapse of sanity when i asked if you carried the paint -- what was i thinking??? LOL

Too funny. Could be that as we get older.......we aren't thinking. That's reserved for the younger amongst us. We've already done enough thinking. ;)

Hi Capt,
Haven't forgotten. I'm actually working on it now. Should have it figured out a bit later today.

i still think and since i got older i only have two obvious flaws:

1. i can't remeber stuff as well as i used to

2. i can't remember stuff as well as i used to

other than that i'm fine!

what paints do you reccomend for plastics. I have used parkers in the past but is there something better looking.I have blue bills reds and widgeon to repaint. If you have picts of repaints could you post them.

Part of that decision depends upon the manufacturer of the decoys and the materials they used. If they used virgin plastic..........you're in luck. If they used regrind....you're in for a job and may never get it to stick well. Some of the regrind must be sand blasted and other regrinds must be flame etched.

I would recommend using the FME after sand blasting and put it on thin. It will bond better and cure better.

Now, if I were doing it, I'd sand blast, prime with Goldens GAC-200 and then paint with Goldens........thats IF I were going to repaint plastics.
