Restle Coating with Fiberglass Dust

Hi Gents,
About to begin the process of restle coating 3 dozen Herters 81s. Wondering if anyone has ever tried substituting fiberglass dust for the typical saw dust or corn cob grit. I plan to use titebond III as the glue. I have a large volume of fine fiberglass dust (dust source is cured fiberglass and polyester resin).

I've heard the sawdust can rot. Plus I have the fiberglass dust on hand.

In other news my pup Canvas is now 10mo old and doing very well in her training. I am also converting a 24ft aluminum V hull cabin cruiser into my new side console tender. I'll have to get pics of the boat and Canvas up one of these days.

All the best,
Paul

I'v restle coated some foamers I made with saw dust& TBII, never tryed or heard of the fiberglass dust. I'd be concerened with the bonding of a wood glue to fiberglass. Another place to try is www.foamdecoys.net post up this question on their forum under foam decoys, some one there should be able to answer. It tis an interesting idea tho.

I think I'd steer clear of the fiberglass. There may not be enough porosity to get a good bond, as well as fiberglass itches like crazy. If you need sawdust, I'm sure there is more than one forum member that would be willing to help you out, just show up with a broom and dust pan...

Paul,

I don't think I'd use fiberglass dust, just because of the potential for lung problems. If you do decide to use it make sure you have a good respirator or at the least a tight fitting mask.

I was hoping for a stronger, more durable coating. Plus I would never have to worry about rot.

I've also thought about using dust from composite decking.

Why not use sand? It wouldn't rot.

From my experience the paint seems to soak into sawdust making a very durable coating. I have made hundreds of decoys using Titebond II and acrylic paint and don't have to worry about the paint nor rotting.

Thanks Lee, I used Titebond II and sawdust and cranked out 30 tonight. Now they are drying and later this week I will apply a second and third layer.
