Rhode Island early season

Just finished the 4 day early season hunt. My two spots in Tiverton & Little Compton resulted in zero shots. I only gave it a couple hours on Friday, Saturday & Monday but the blue bird no wind warm wx was not the best.

No matter nice to get out.

Next weekend the put & take pheasant season starts. And I think I'll be driving up to Maine for a few days on Sunday for woodcock & grouse.

Gary,

Managed to get out a few times as well but came up with nothing saw a few woodies but out of range . Coolest was when two flew right over my head before legal all i heard was the notable wind through the wings . Still a fun time . I think i will be out for the Pheasant opener , i remember last year it was a zoo where we went may be a afternoon kind of hunt . Any word on our stocking program , with state cuts it may be a light stock this year ?? Not sure but we will see soon enough . Good luck In Maine

re: ducks - worst I've ever done but the warm wx allowed me to take my old dog & she still wants to get out.

Re: pheasant opener crowd

Give it an hour or so after sunrise & enjoy the day. The crowd pushes through too fast. Even the guys with dogs rush them along & by pass birds.

Who knows on the stocking program? I expect it will be fine until Thanksgiving. The game wardens all have the stocking schedule. If you can get one by himself they can give you the entire run down.

I look forward to the woodcock season.

We'll have to meet some time for the Wednesday release at Great Swamp. My 11 year old Boykin has a lot of experience if your friend's water spaniel is not too rambuncious for her to hunt with. She is OK for an hour or so if the cover is not too thick. The 20 month old is a rocket but she isn't the best example for another dog to run with.

Gary ,

It was extremly warm the days i was out , but it got the dog out anyways . I think you are right about the hour wait on the phesant opener great tip . I have noticed in years past that guys blow through the fields and are gone by 8 maybe that will give me time to cleanup some of the left over birds . Where in Maine do you hunt ? I hunted Starks Maine for deer a few years back great place saw alot of woodcock up there back then . My partner has been hitting Maine for Grouse i guess it is the slow year for them up there . He heded to vermont but have not heard bcak from him yet . Good luck this weekend

I took my 12 year old nephew for the youth waterfowl day hunt today. His first time hunting, I took him to a near by cow pond on my buddies farm. he has shot some trap before with with a 20 gauge but today he had to use my 12 gauge Bennilli. We had about 5-6 mallards land in our decoys about 10 minutes early and took off after after a few minutes. Then an other small flock came in about 20 minutes later but just out side of the decoys, then out of nowhere a lone drake woody landed no more 30 ' in front of him. I told him as soon as he takes off to take him but , he missed. and that was it we never seen an other duck the rest of the morning. Not to make excuses for him but being the first time with a 12 gauge and first time shooting sitting down I probably didn't give him the best chance to succeed He said he had fun so I can't wait to take him again.

I've been going up to Eustis Maine to fish in mid June for about 12 years. Started going up to bird hunt a few years ago.
