Roll top and motor cover

I have been pulling my hair out trying to learn to sew. Here are a couple things I have (mostly) finished.

The roll top cover for the cockpit area is an idea I stole from Bill Burriss. It will be covered with grass (on order) soon.

Here is a shot of my motor cover. It will be grassed also.

I am working on the Dodger. The sewing machine had problems today and I had to wait for the owner ) to come and fix it (again).

Dave,

The boat is really coming along nicely- I'd noticed the wood cutouts in the woodwork before, but not the artistry in the camo paint. It looks great! And it looks like you will be ready long before shrimp/crab season!

Wish I could take credit for the roll top cover, but I got the idea from a picture of Jamus' BB2, and I believe it was actually constructed by Dave Clark... It is a very fuctional piece of equipment and really helps hide the boat.

Today was our last hunt of the season- scratched a Bluebill and 2 Buffy's. The Bluebill was a huge success because we had the first 9 BB dekes I made in the spread.

Hope to see your boat in the water soon!

Take Care,
Bill

Dave ,

Nice job !!! Boat looks fantastic , i built the cackler a few years back and use it year round for fisihng as well as hunting , It is supper stable and goes like hell with a 30 on it , i have GPS,ed mine at 28 on a flat calm day with no paytload and myself plenty fast enough for me , tyake rough water real well pretty common for us to be dealing with 2 - 4 footers where we hunt and it will handle that all day long no problem , one down side it needs some extra push when loded down with 2 guys and the gear wehn hunting but othere than that you will not regret building it . Good luck , enjoy nothing like huting from a boat you built !!!

Dave, Very nice boat!! I am trying to decide which one to build next but may have to build a couple kayaks first. Wife got a bug to do some skinny water paddling. Dirty job but some one has to do it. Probably cedar strip ones. Your boat does look like it could use a couple more ponies. They sure do turn nice and are sooo stable. Mine has opened quite a few jon boat eyes. I do like the gihle cover for your motor, am working up something like that for mine too. Good job and Good Luck.

Dave, the boat looks great. I really like the detail of the paint job you did. Watched your video and it sure appears to turn on a dime and looks great on the water.

Watched your video Dave. The camera person did a nice job. Nice and smooth. Glad you got the boat wet. I am sure you are going to be pleased with it. I enjoyed your build from start to finish if they are ever finished.

I got into a little sewing. Made a soft gun case. That was a learning experience. Got a lot of help from the head of the house.....I take care of international affairs she takes care of the house. Works well..

Those sewing machines can be complicated to the uninitiated especially if their is a problem. It helps to hum " We shall overcome "

looks real nice Dave. I like it when people add all the "bells and whistles" - what is the point of having a custom boat otherwise!?!?!?

Thanks for posting,

T

Thanks guys for all the comments.

Here are a couple shots of my dodger (still in progress). I attached the bottom of it to my grass rails so I did not have to drill holes for snaps.

The top of the doger is wrapped around the pipe that holds the whole things up. The bottom is adjustable with velcro straps. In the picture, I do not have all of them pulled tight to the same tension. I am still making it and will have it on and off ten more times before I am done, I am sure. Of course, all of this will be painted like the other stuff when I get to that point.

I am still trying to figure out how to attach the top. Several things have crossed my mine on the matter.

Dave,

Nice to see the boat in action. From your video, sound like you are pleased. I love how sharp a turn you can make with the Devlins, how "tight" they feel on the water when maneuvering, and the stability. I was amaze how much safer I felt in a 10' Broadbill than an old 14 foot jon boat I had. It is hard to explain in words. Can only imagine how the garvey style feel. Suspect your boat will feel even more safe/stable once you get it loaded down and have a larger section of hull touching water. Are you going to put a bigger engine on it?

It was not by chance raining on you during your tests, was it? Surely NOT in Washington... I think it is going to take a couple of weeks for my camo/dodger to dry out before it is safe to put them away for shrimp/crab season. Less than 258 days til duck season!

Take care!

[font=Verdana,Arial,Helvetica]Just curious, are you worried about water coming into the cockpit through the holes in the spray rails?

No, not really, a bit of splash might get under there, but the combing should deflect it. Where I hunt, it rains all the time, some of the places we go (either salt water, or large reservoirs) we get splashed or wet no matter what we do. That's why I have all that fancy gortex stuff. In the little puddles, its all different.. calm and still.

Shoot, a little water in the face never hurt.... it gives us stories to tell!
