September "What's on your Workbench?"

Well here we are at the unofficial start of fall. I have to say my absolute favorite time of year. For me this month is always one in which I feel rushed to complete pieces for the fall shows that I attend. So with that in mind I've been spending a lot of time at my Workbench both carving, painting and sketching new ideas for upcoming pieces.

First up for me this month is that Ruddy drake that I show you without paint last month. He's just about done, just a few darkening and warming glazes in the deeper parts and then I'll start finishing the hen to pair up with him. I've done many ruddies over the years and like usual I was looking for somewhat of a new direction to go with the paint. I really tried to concentrate on not painting individual feathers, more to the concept of getting the overall feel of the bird rather than trying to make a model of one. The two areas that I haven't been able to figure out in a "looser" way yet are the tail and the tertials. But that becomes my challenge for the future. When I painted the side pockets and breast I wanted some very thick paint so that anyone picking it up could feel the texture and flow. In that I painted those areas six times, so far, to get the looseness of the different darks and lights. When carving it I struggled with my long time background of making decoratives wherein you strive for feather for feather accuracy with all of the measurements and feather counts and such. What I ended up with is a decoy well wider and longer than a real bird with an exaggerated bill shape. Here is the whole decoy.

And a detail shot of the head.

I've also started painting my "Toronto Slick" mallard this past week. Once again I've been experimenting in trying to paint the black areas without using any black paint. I id break down and used just a little Ivory Black when doing the base painting of the rump. But where I've gone with this area since is to mix a black using Thalo Green, Alizirin Crimson and French Ultra Marine Blue. Something different and loads of fun. Here is that bird in progress.

And here is the rear end of the decoy after a couple of painting sessions. This whole area got darker and more colorful during this morning's paint session so I'll have to show you that stage in the next couple of days.

Now this decoy is not a true slick because I did some feather outlining by using some stop cuts and then removing the wood behind it when carving. I did this same thing on the Gadwall I made in this style earlier this summer and decided to stay with it just to be different.

I've also been working on another Labrador, big surprise right? This is a drake with both wings exposed cut off the same pattern that I used for the the World Rig. At time's it's funny to me how you can cut the same pattern again and again but each one looks distinctly different from the others. This guy is hollowed white pine with a basswood head. Once again I used a "pocket" technique for setting the head.

And this is a hen wigeon carved from New Jersey cedar with a white pine head that will pair up with the drake I showed you last month. Ready to be sanded and then painted.

I have lots more in the works that I'll be showing in the next couple of weeks.

So What's on your Workbench this September?

I have many things going per Month, but seldom post because of time constraints, and blurred vision at the end of the Work-Day.

I am working on a Duck Boat Restoration, but technically that doesn't fit a Bench so I will go with some very exciting Decoy-Descriptions.

I started painting in Oils. What a Joy, I cannot contain my enthusiasm for the Blending, and ability to go wet on wet. I started out with a beautiful American Coot, and used various techniques such as "Wet on Wet", "Dry on Wet", "Dry on Tacky", "Scratch Paint", "Dry on Dry", "Heavy Petting", and eventually Sandpaper. I will Hunt this Decoy hard in the Marshes of FL. I am really pleased that it turned out. I'll wham you Guys with 4 Pictures so you can see all the sweet lines, and scratches, and where the putty fell out, and the spot where the Sealer bled, and I accidentally dropped it on the Garage-Floor, but I'm still dang proud to have done it...

The new tender has been on my workbench since January. Prowled the internet for months till I found the hull I wanted. A 24ft aluminum V was pretty difficult to locate here in the midwest. I've put a lot of work into it - a little left until its new maiden voyage. Eventually I'll post a detailed description of the project - but for now I'll post the latest picture during painting:

Here's my ugly duckling. Western White Pine to be hollowed. Right now it weighs 43 pounds. It makes the goose behind it look small. I need to finish it in the next month to be ready for duck season as a confidence decoy.

Sweeeet Swaaaan Andy!

Have you ever had them come into the decoys when hunting...they are that big! Best thing about doing swans is painting...takes a lot of paint, but it is easy.

Chuck

I want to second Sean's sentiments about your coot Derek.

I'd also like to state that its great that a beginner feels comfortable enough on this thread to show that quality of work and to describe his process in detail.

Good Job! You keep at it you'll get there some day.

I am looking forward to the paint! The rough out was rough!

Swan's looking sweet Andy! Can't wait to see it done.

Pair of hollow white cedar spoonies or "Hollywood Mallards" as we sometimes call them down on the River. They are sitting on a David Clark decoy bag. Best bags in the industry in my humble opinion...

Pat, do you have a picture of the whole drake spoonie? I have a couple of blocks of wood and head stock set aside for a couple.

You certainly are a decoy making machine. You seem to make more in a couple weeks than I can all year.

Now they are what I call sweet, they are Beautyfull what great job you have done on them mate.
Take care and God Bless

Its all about Building that Bond.

Some just off the bench.Still figuring out the hen marsh ducks. Was thinking of using some extender to try and blend the feather edges...but its hot and muggy around right now...things were drying kind of quick. I added the ring around the mallard neck after this photo : ).Ive got to start unloading some birds...im running out of shelf space :).

Unbelievable decoys guys..i'm blown away from all your talent..I only wish I could do that...regarding whats on my bench..I have a reeealy large work bench, because on it I currently have a 100' x6' pressure treat wooden fence I'm finishing off with 13' custom gates, a 40'x3' stone retaining wall i'm half way through, front stoop and sidewalk ripped out and a new one going back in..a 20' Lund alaskan half sanded, and needing a few good coats of Lou's FME medium grey paint. picked up a lincoln 220v mig yesterday so now I have to get a hole through the outside brickwork and into the downstairs panel so I can weld up a EMT conduit blind on the boat for this years waterfowl season..and on the other end of the bench I have 2 Trinity Tweed Deluxe 15watt all tube guitar amp kits I'm putting together...other then that and working every day, not much happening...Cool thread...keep it coming :)^)

Good stuff guys, I especially appreciate 'Pat's Pile' and Derek's humor...

Doing lots of home improvements, using up most of my 'free time' and limiting my time to work on the fun stuff like decoys and the boat, but finally got some time to cut out 4 swans for forum members.

In the background you'll see a ruddy and BBWD that are base coated (have been for a while) and will be getting some tube oil on them soon (I hope!)
