September "What's on your Workbench?"

Good Stuff!

PAt G. - Thumbs up - that Legacy talk. I agree. Great looking Mallard & Black. The Redhaeds; those tall necks will look cool out there, and no Ice on the Bills I bet...

Grant! Those commons are awesome. Guess they might go well with my Barrows rig I got from you. Incredible job as usual. I'm excited for the late winter birds to get here. I will call you tomorrow.

Pat,
Love your decoys. I do have a question. How do you get such a nice finish on your birds.
As hard as I try I can't get the finish that smooth. I think I sanded for three days on my last bird
and it's still not as smooth a finish as yours!
Thanks Again, John

John - Good to hear from you. Years ago, one of my carving mentors, Jerry Cranwill introduced me to a Sandrite drum sander. It's amazing. Sands decoys smoother than anything. If you guys think I crank decoys, Jerry's production puts me to shame...

Hope to see you at Erie this year John. God bless! Pat

Nice pintails. After I read about pintails being way up this year, I lamented not making some more pintail decoys. Now it is too late!

Well I just got back to FL from MN, and it's nice to be home. I got my Boat Shop setup again, and found some chunks of Cedar I had left behind.

I decided to start a PIOOMB-Style Redhead.(Thats a Pulled it out of my Butt-Style in case you didn't know.) But after I Sharpie-Scribbled it, Bandsaw-Sliced it, and Roughed it out it turned out all Jersey, MD, VA looking, or something. I don't know what kind of Style it is at all now. I don't even know how to abbreviate Virginia let alone make a goofy Decoy that resembles some old East Coast Heritage. I am really displeased, and I realized my Wife is always telling me not to wear Crew-Socks with my Skateboard Shoes, and that my Shirts all have paint, and junk on em. I've never been to New York , or LA, and I'm disgusted to even mention Paris. I have no Style at all I think! Who knows??? I'm glad I can alwasy fix up a Herters. That old chunky MN-Style Decoy can't be goofed up. Gonna be a sad weekend for me I'm afraid...

All I have this month is a couple sneak peeks at a few upcoming decoys. Everything else is double-top-secret and headed to Tuckerton at the end of the month...

It is one of my goals to be able to paint and carve as cleanly as you can. My lines are not as straight and crisp yet, but I will keep practicing.

well I finished all the hard work on this trio. two are memory birds for a dog that has passed one is going in my rig. They will all meet up at different times even being spread across two states to hunt. Was happy to see the pattern went well on the wood and carved easily with drawknife and spoke shave. Hollowed basswood, Jansens from Willy, simple gunners

Nice Pintails Tom! Everyone has some nice birds coming along.

I just finished two black ducks, who are ready to hollow. I didn't say "pair" because one is a smoothie and the other has raised primaries.

I have two more black ducks cutout along with a Drake Pintail. My drake Old Squaws are ready for paint. The sleeper hen Old Squaw and the 2 blacks I just finished are ready to be hollowed. Crunch time for the season!
