Septic tank Alternatives

Well I just called the health department and thinking the holding tank idea was the perfect solution. Unfortunately there is only one county in Alabama that allows holding tanks and Madison County isn't it. I did learn that with my situation I can get away with only 60' of field line. Later next week I should have a better grasp on the cost after I apply to the county for a permit (they will send an inspector out to run his own tests and tell me what I need) and the contractor looks at the job.

Appreciate the input. I don't know what the final solution will be but you've given me some great suggestions.

Eric after all the screamin' and shoutin' are done, in the long run a septic system hast the lowest cost to maintain and will be an investment if you ever decide to sell.

Agreed, put the tank and field in . No monthly pump fees or future inspections .

True story . . .

I sit in my local planning board, which reviews applications for development and issues permits for construction and the like. Pretty much every land use dispute in town ends up in front of us eventually. Often it's an issue of neighbors not getting along, and that dispute turns into a running series of complaints about various issues.

Anyway, in an oversight when our town ordinances were written, they are very strict about septic standards but don't have a lot of rules about outhouses. So somebody installs a pit privy, and it's a hot summer, and he doesn't take care of it, so it stinks and attracts a lot of flies. Neighbor complains, and our code enforcement officer looks at the town ordinance and basically realizes there's nothing he can do--the damn thing is a mess, but it's legal. (Time to fix the ordinance, but that's another story.)

So the complaining neighbor says, "If he gets to have one, I want one, too."

I am not making a single bit of this up, I swear.
