SneakBox Insurance

I called 2 places this week and they wouldn't insure a sneakbox. I had called Christi Marine Insurance, they for some reason thought I was joking with them and were laughing as they hung up on me. Anyone have a company that I could get a policy written.

My boats and trailers are insured with Erie Insurance, where I have my homeowners and auto policies.
We modified the policy to include them.

My MLB Chuck Huff is insured through Nationwide on a boat policy, no problems. Faxed them the info and a photo for their records.

Amica covers my fleet including the two scull boats. Pictures went a long to clarify the type of motor boat being covered. Actually the homeowners policy covered small boats and motors I believe up 16 ft & 25-hp, but I would have to verify before swearing to the limits. I run a 25 instead of a 30 just to fall under that cap as I didn't get the rider boat policy till I got the 20-ft.

I have my estuary under my homeowners. It covers damage and liability for boat/motor/trailer at home, on the road or on the water. It also includes some $ value for on board items. Not much annually to have it covered.

I am concerned with the liabilty if something happens. The way my lawyer looked at it no insurance policy is bullet proof. Using your homeowners with an umbrella could bite you in the ass if something happens. Someone PM'd me and adjent and she is working on the quote now. At the end of the day the boat, motor and trailer are nothing if something happens.

I was always using my home owners with an umbrella but after reading the post from a member here from Montana started me thinking about looking into my policy. So for 200 or so bucks a year it's a gimeME.

I had an accident in my buddies Snow Goose last year, $100,000 medical bill with my injured friend, totally my fault. I have a State Farm homeowners policy with an umbrella and they covered it, barely. You have to read the exceptions in that little booklet of tissue paper thin paper which is the legal bible of what's covered and what isn't.

When I finished building my own boat I made sure to insure it for liability and loss. I think it's less than $100.00 a year.

Also as far as your "sneakbox" is concerned, it's just a boat to the insurance company, I wouldn't even use that name, sounds kind of shaky to a lay person.

I carry $300K liability on each boat. I'm really not too concerned about my own boats. I have them insured for what I paid for them. The liability is what matters to me. Short of the boat sinking I doubt that I would file a claim on my own boat given what I do for work.

Try Progressive. I'm amazed at what they will insure.

Try Zurich Direct (ask for the yacht policy). Heritage Marine insures The Peregrine through Zurich.

Have mine insured under Farmers. Just got a reasonable quote from State Farm too.
Dont go to a Marine Insurance Company, they are for big boats.

Ryan,

Believe it or not, my homeowners insurance (Geico) would only insure a "name-brand" boat, and would not cover my Estuary on the road or in the water. If it is in the garage when something happens, it can only be covered to a certain max together with all my stuff. Dave Clark had a fit when I told him...

That reminds me, I need to get separate insurance for the boat. Dave gave me the name of a company he recommended, it's in an email somewhere. Who do you use?

Homeowners policies usually have a cap on watercraft at $1000. Ask me how I know- I had one stolen.

I use Progressive, if you have a hull id # and is coast guard certified you shouldn't have a problem getting insurance.
