sneakbox rebuild

I started the restore on the sneakbox, it has been going well. I took off the old spray shield, pulled of the old ice runners(rotted) and started stripping the boat. I got off luck in the fact that the fiberglass was pulling off in strips so it cut down on some of the sanding, ( There is still plenty of sanding to do) I stripped about 80% of the bottom this way. There has to be 10 coats of paint and 2 coats of fiberglass on the boat. So far haven't found any rotted wood expect the ice runners. I started sanding the bottom today working on whats left of the fiberglass. Went alittle slow with the belt sander but made progress. I'm borrowing a better belt sander tomorrow, plus will employ 7 1/4 in angle grinder w/ sanding pads to help get down to the last layerbeing careful not to go too deep, then follow up with the belt sander to finish it out. Hoping to have the bottom done tomorrow then move on to the top. It looks like it's gonna be a fun project. Once I flip it over I have to ripp off the decoy racks, and motor board, plus a small piece of 1/4 round on the edge of the boat( rotted in places. The pics are blurry, will work on taking some better shots tomorrow. Sorry for right now though. Chris

Chris ,

I would say you have defianetly got a project there , it that hull strip planked ? What kind of wood is under all the glass ? I would suggest replacing the 1/4 inch round with a 3/4 piece makes a great place for your foot getting in and out of the baot when things are cold and icey . I pput a 3/4x3/4 piece on my Cackler on the deck above the sheer clamp works great . good luck keep the pics coming

I am building a Cackler now. I am not sure what you are talking about: The 3/4 inch round piece. Can you post a picture for me?

Dave

Dave ,

I built my cackler about 5 or 6 years ago , the rail was not in the ADevlin plan i added it after seeing how well my buddy Andrews worked on is Snow Goose , it is basically put on after decking and it allows you to step in and out of the baot without slipping off the side deck , i will try to find some pics for you , it has been a while

I did the same project last year, then decided to re-do the keelsons this year.
I have 22 hour this year into sanding, not counting the rebuild and painting.
I just consider it a labor of love of the sport.
Enjoy every minute of it.

It's a all white cedar boat built back in the 40's. I put about 3hrs in yesterday, and got alot done. 1/4 round is gone bottom is completely stripped of glass and mostly sanded only have one side board left. The funny part was I stripped the rest of the glass w/ a heat gun. Who ever originally glass boat didn't add enough hardener so it would soften from the heat of sanding. Ran out of sanding belts so Had to quit for the time being. Flipped the boat over removed the decoy racks and motor board. I found some old rot that became new rot when the decoy racks were added. There was abit of a patch under it plus the racks were caulked and made a perfect place for water to sit. I'll be taking time off on it for a couple of days have some other crap to do but will have some questions for ya'll shortly. Chris

looks good Chris. I guess I will give you a pass on skipping training yesterday. We had 9-10 dogs anyway.

I hear ya, with everything I did last week on the armada it was better toi use my hall pass when it is most needed. Give me a call when you get time. Chris

Just wanted to post an update, boat is stripped to bare wood. The hull is in very good shape for it's age. The only rot I found is pictured. I also started rescrewing the hull to tighten it back up. It's going well, ran out of screws so it's off to home depot again for more screws. I'm pre drilling w/ a counter sink bit before screwing the plank down with a #10 brass wood screw. It tightens it up real nice. Will be placing an order for my wood and fiberglass supplies this week. Next week I'm planning on cutting in the dog box and repairing the deck rot. I'll get some more pics up when there is more next week when I can show some more progress.Chris

Thanks for posting Chris this should be a fun project to watch and it looks like you are coming along fine with it and I will look forward to seeing more
pictures of the rebuild.

take care
Eddie.

I need some input, I did alittle more deconstruction and found that I have a few more ribs the need replacement or repair. These ribs were saw cut out of cedar. And are made in two sections sistered in the middle. I was thinking about re-doinging the original one out of white oak. It is a little pricey but for one rib so be it. Now I have 5 that need replacement or repair. Is there a cheaper alternative to white oak that is just as strong. It's like 2.80 a bft. Should I just redo them in cedar or what? Thank god I decided to I needed access to the bottom of the boat and ripped up the permanant floor. I would've never caught it if not. Also what size board do I need to get for a motor board. Thickness and lengthwise. :D Thanks Chris

I'd stay with the cedar ribs. Will be lighter and keep the boat more original. So.......how many beers does it take to scrape the fiberglass off a BBBS?

Alittle update, got the dog well cut and framed in. I used oak on the sides and cedar for the arches. I used oak on the sides ( installed first)due to the fact I had to cut a rib. I wanted to replace the strength of that rib because of it's location toward the bow. I got all the rot cut out on the stern deck. I haven't replaced it yet because the openings are allowing me working room. I also started re-making the ribs. It was interesting to come up with a plan, I got frustrated for awhile because it wasn't moving fast enough but I finally accepted that it was gonna take some time . What I did to copy them was cover the rib with blue masking tape and the cut arches and thickness of of the rib. I removed the tape template and traced it on a piece of scrape luan. I then used it as my template. It took quite abit of tinkering to get the arch right but after some tailoring they fit pretty well. I did find that there are two differnt radiuses so I had to make two templates. I am about half through making the ribs. I am merely sistering the new to the old, no sense in making more work ripping out the old. The new ones will provide the structure. I'll put up some pics tomorrow I'm beat and I gotta find the batteries. My plan is to finish the ribs by the weekend do a final cleaning in the hull and paint it before doing the deck repairs. It will help in work room and keeping me from passing out. Next two weeks I'm gonna work on, fitting the motor board, replacing the oar locks, interior shelf, building the floor, replacing the decking, and decoy racks, and hatch covers. The project has been going well. It has taken me longer than expected not because of the work but finding the time to get it done. I'm shooting for the opener of coastal. I joked with clammy the other day, I told him I predict trying to avoid wet paint on opening day. So far it looks like it's gonna come true....

Pics tomorrow. Chris

Here is a much delayed update, So I'll bring ya'll up to speed been busy with hunting season. It is finally looking like a boat, I got the rib work done and have rescrewed the entire hull. I have the first coat of paint on the interior. and have finished up the deck repairs. ( I was waiting until I painted inside) I am going to make the hatch covers this weekend. I ordered the epoxy and fiberglass will be here Mon or Tues. once that is here I can run around and do my hull patches and final sand before glassing. I have the floor mapped out just have to plane the boards and install them. I am recycling the old floor boards as there is nothing wrong with them. The only chnage to the floor is I'm adding two wide boards in the center that are removable. Then it's motorboard, decoy racks, and sprayshield all of which I'm making myself. Almost forgot. I have to put the ice runners on. I'm planning on using composite material for them( Trex or PVC) gotta see what I can scrounge up. [35]
