Chris,
Hunted near auburn,ny in a town called union springs. One of the local guides from the area Jay Barnes of Frontenac Fowlers teamed up with Joe Austin of Delmarva Outdoor Adventures from maryland and they hunt the birds on the spring migration northward. DOA outfitters hunts the birds all season in delaware and maryland and then follows the flight north through PA and into NY. Both the guides were a blast, down to earth regular guys who really enjoy what they do. I would book with them again. We shot plenty of birds and had loads come over for shots. Most shots were at 30 - 40 yds., not too bad. In the 2 half day hunts we had we probably saw in excess of 3500 birds. Most groups that flew in were in 100 -200 bird groups. We did see some groups that were over 400- 500 though. A few even landed in the spread (no ground blasting allowed!). We hunted out of field blinds, sitting up. There were approx 1900 decoys out, about 1400 silosocks and deadly decoys and the rest were shells and full bodies. There were also about a dozen flying/flapper type birds in the spread. If you drove past the spread you'd swear it was the real thing. The dekes really came alive in just a light wind. I suspect if we hunted out of layout blinds we may have enjoyed some closer average shots at the birds but I couldn't say for sure. Since I've never hunted snow geese or even field hunted for waterfowl I had a blast. Thought about getting rid of the boat(only for a second though) and trying to find some farms on the island to hunt, lol! Both guides have websites you can find on the internet. They also both provide all other types of waterfowl hunting. I am considering booking a diver hunt with one or both of them, one on the finger lakes with Jay and maybe one down in Maryland with DOA. Overall I'd rate the experience as an solid 7 out of 10, I was pleased and so was my friend Jim.
