Snows on the move

Late afternoon today the sky was filled with skeins of Snows headed south. The Polar Vortex announced its arrival with strong winds all day - and the mercury is headed down toward zero tonight here northeast of Albany.

So, you guys in Jersey should see some newcomers tomorrow that will have found their way by the light of the (just past) full moon.

All the best,

SJS

Just got off the phone with SJS, had not seen his post yet, and advised that at 6:00 pm, I got out of my truck and in the dark could hear large numbers of snow geese overhead; there is a near full moon or full moon with a smoking NWester so I guess they are on the move.

I was on the I90 heading West last night outside of Albany and saw two big flocks flying low looking to land in the dark. We were near the canal where there is open water.

A friend and I just got back from Arkansas and the Specks and Snows were coming in huge flocks. String after string. A lot more geese than ducks.

I sat in the cold before sunrise this morning and was rewarded by watching several hundred snows. They were high enough to catch the morning light and were the color of fire as they winged their way south looking for a place to land after a long night.

Beautiful morning, but I'm home already.

Well its tragic timing... I have work obligations, and Xmas parties, etc... There are Geese flying everywhere you look!!! I seen Blue Bills on the bay and there are mallards heading down in small groups.. I trust there have been no NJ reports yet as all you brothers are armed!!! Shoot em up. BE SAFE! thanks guys up north for the heads up and postage south!!
See what I can do tomorrow AM....

I heard some flying south over me here in South Jersey on Tuesday night, and saw my first flock while I was out for a couple of hours last
Saturday. I expect that they should be along Delaware Bay in huntable numbers by today.

On a related note, I saw the first large flock of buffleheads since the opener on my drive over Mobile Bay today. And it was about 1/2 mature drakes. A good sign.
Unfortunately this weekends winds & weather aren't going to be conducive to safe hunting the big water.

Steve, your heads up has brought snows to Delaware. Seeing larger gatherings of them in a few fields. Seems that they are gathering at Prime Hook, then moving en masse to feeding grounds--that reads, wherever the buggers all decide to go. There will not be much flying via the moon tonight, though--heavy cloud cover and a winter weather advisory through tomorrow morning, when things will again revert to the low 50's, going into 60's by Sunday.
What a freaky late fall this has been. It will be a welcome event to see fowl here at last.

Big numbers showing up in my parts of Jersey. Lots of Georges prime hook birds cross the bay and feed in the bid fields over here . Let the frustration begin!

Back in the day I chased and hunted greater Snows from NC up to NJ, and many places in between for many season. NJ was the best hunting, and not in fields

You are correct Jode, frustration at the very least. No waterfowl can "Stick It To Ya", like Snows, leaser & greater.

For those that are bewitched and bewildered by the Snow Goose may I suggest reading - SONG OF THE NORTH WIND a Story of the Snow Goose by Paul A. Johnsgard. Good reading, illustrations and photo's circa 1974.

Good morning, Jode~

I "enjoyed" enough frustration with our Goose from the North Wind that I unilaterally declared them Non-game Species about 10 years ago....I have been much more content since then. Now, I just enjoy their beauty and their calls - but leave the chasing to others.

All the est,

SJS
