Dear Duck Boats.Net friends,
I thought of you all yesterday when I drove through Augusta, Georgia and saw a Cabelas "Outpost", aka, smaller Cabelas. Where I live on Hilton Head Island, there is no such thing as a Cabelas or other outdoor store. So it felt funny, good funny, to be surrounded by camo clothing and so much hunting and fishing equipment.

I'm not sure this is a miracle or a sin: I did not buy one thing while wandering around! I do believe that is a first for me. I used to spend so much online at Cabelas that they would send me one of those hardbound super catalogs annually.

Life changes with your setting.

I thought you might be interested in my boat movement. I sold my fine 13' Whaler. I had it for six years. Kept good care of it. Replaced all the wood. It kept me safe on the Port Royal Sound and the inshore estuaries around Hilton Head. I caught many beautiful red fish and sea trout in that classic Whaler,

The image of that brand served me well when I decided to get a bigger boat. After posting it on Craigslist, it sold in one day for $500 more than I paid for it six years ago.

Congratulations on your boat swap! Very nice photos all around. Your woodworking - and the wood itself - on your 13-footer is excellent.

Question: What was the rehab needed on the 13 that would have run you $3500 ? The boat looks pretty nice in the photos.

Regarding your question. To refurbish the boat properly, it was time to have the spider cracks taken care of. Not covered up with paint and cracking again in a year, but all the spider cracks sanded down inside and out.

Obviously you don't have to do that. But I knew that sooner or later it would be necessary. Selling the boat now made sense before the spider cracks got worse.

Have had a 13' Whaler since 1970. My brother and I covered the deck with 1/2 plywood and had head lights on the bow with hand made 12v generater for power. Speared flounder, eels, fluke and crabbed at night. Later converted it to a duck blind. Later years it went to a member of the forum.
Still own a 13' that I'm putting a deck on for crabbing and fishing. You can't beat a Whaler.
