Mac graduated this month, Meg's got her license now, and I feel like my "kids" became sub-adults all of a sudden.

The boy worked his ass off this winter to get the best grades he could, and managed a 6th overall at the Canadian Nationals Xcountry skiing, beating all his best buds. Plan A was for him to relax post grad and go fishing with me more, then he got offered a job with the Yukon Forest Fighters' outfit and all of a sudden he's working 12 hour days. Its a great job and he's getting the chance to learn tons of cool stuff, plus they are paying him $22/hr when the OT kicks in. But I miss doing stuff with him.

I've been encouraging him to take a year off, travel explore, and mature before showing up at the next school level, which he's saving money to do. I thought it would be good to have something to get his traveling off the ground, and he found out about and signed up for a 5 day running race in November. Its a hundred mile race. In Darjeeling, India. He's already paid the sign up fee. Seems this kid's "launch" is well underway.

Fire season usually ends abruptly, so he's signed up to help out with 3 sheep hunts in Aug. for fun, money, and to train for the 100 miler. When he gets out of the bush in early Sept he's got about 5 days to hunt with me, before heading to a construction job (working on more hours for his first year apprentice in carpentry) in Calgary. From Calgary on to India, and beyond as long as his savings will carry him. Because he did so well at the Nationals last year, and they will be in Whitehorse next winter, he is qualified to race here if he wants.

In a kind of fairy tale ending to what might be our last hunting season together for a while, amazingly, I drew a permit sheep hunt near town here, and so did Mac. I kid you not. I've been waiting for this area for over 10 years. Its a short flight from town to an alpine lake, there are only seven tags issued for this zone, and my family owns 2 of them this year. That's a pretty nice gift from Karma. I don't even care if we get a ram, its going to be a great time. Meg is considering coming in with me for a few days in Aug to help me find a ram, and then I'll go in again with Mac in Sept to help him find one. Sadly, we won't likely have a chance to hunt birds together this year before he'll have to go. I'm so glad we have had so many great adventures together over the last 18 years.

So I guess its time for me to change my avatar picture, to mark the end of that era. That little kid grew up, but he's still got that same smile.

Mike,
Congrats on all the milestones you and your family have reached. Thanks for taking us along on the ride. It was nice meeting your family in person but even nicer to be able to follow along on some of their accomplishments.
Yes, it is time to change your profile picture. :>) :>)

Please,Dad, coach him on how important it is to obtain ALL his hydration from "safe" sources when he travels to Inda to run the race-always from sealed water bottles, no exceptions! Good luck!

Yes, this is a difficult time watching them spread their wings and take off. In short order he'll be on to new things and every once in a while you'll shake your head in wonder at the man he has become.

Congratulations to Mac for his accomplishments. I'm sure that I speak for most of the people on this forum that have lived vicariously through your adventures these past many years - Thanks.

Congrats to you Mike. It's obvious where he got his character from. You've been a great inspiration to your family.

Wow, holy smokes, what a fine young man Mac has become. And is that Meg???
Weren't they just little kids a few years back?
Dang Mike, You sure have a lot to be proud of!

My how time flies, you blink and their all grown and gone. From reading about ya'lls adventure here over the years, I say well job done to you for raising a fine young man!

A few more blinks and you'll be dragging grand kids thru the mountains there... best of luck to Mac as he starts his on adventure of life!

OMG.......I'm at nearly a complete loss for words......I remember when Meg was taller than Mac and was likely thumping him regularly.....and now they've grown into such good looking young adults....and successful, and motivated ones as well....Mac in a suit who'd a thunk it.....

It tickles me that I got to hunt with Mac and will always remember you telling him....."toughen up cupcake"........my guess is that this Fall as he packs you and your hoof shot Sheep, (inside joke for the long timers), out of the bush that he just might be saying the same thing to you.........might just have to write him a note to carry in his pocket to hand to you since he's likely far too polite to actually say that to Dad.......

Tell him he still owes me a cup of tea and I'll expect him to brew it for me in camp as the two of you eat sheep ribs.....I'll pretend I'm there......

So tell us about what Meg is doing...

You done good Dad.....REAL GOOD.......

Steve

Congratulations!

maybe this sounds crazy, but I've been following this board a long time, and it has been very nice to see your son grow up.

You are a great Dad.

All the best from North Carolina.

Wow... I see my own kids growing up and reaching the same milestones, graduation for the oldest and driver's license for the middle, but reading your post and the picture makes me pause and think it does happen so fast because I remember the adventures and pictures you posted over the years. Congratulations on the success of your children.

Hopefully your fire season is not as active, but active enough to bank $$, as ours is over here to the West.

It all sounds splendid Mike. My daughter will be "out the door" next year and off to nursing school at U of AK.

As someone on this board told me some time back - one chapter in the book of life closes and another one opens and begins.

Having one kid through college and the other entering their second year, they never ever really leave. They will always be around at least emotionally and sometimes physically. They will always need you, the need just changes.

Congrats again to you and your family.

Great job ! It looks as though you have two amazing kids well on their way to being good citizens, and productive members of society.... Congratulations !

Mike
It been's a fun ride with your family as they have been growing up via
this web page; your solo hunts with that bad back, then joined by Mac with fishing, of course duck hunting and the great sheep hunting then Australia, Vietnam etc.. Man Mike you have done a great job with a great wife adding her 2cents. The race in India shows how out going your whole family have become. Congratulations.
