I first thought what the... and I was in shock for a minute or so. I have kept this to myself for about a week now and can say it with confidence. My dog figured out steady and casting! I was so shocked the other day when I let her out and she came to me with her bumper. It was like she was trying to say I wanna show you something. So I reached down and commanded give, took the bumper and chunked it about 30 ft or so. She sat at heel and looked at me like ok you can say my name now, I leaned over and lined her like when she's leashed and spat out Sobe. She ran a straight line, picked up and came back to heel. I was so proud, I almost felt like I had done something! I know this is the pretty basic stuff for you guys but for us it was like "the milestone" we needed to go to the next level. After back to back days of short training sessions it is her second nature. I just had to tell it because I remember saying she would break everytime I shot on a thread about leaky waders. I will take a set of wet feet for a dog that's steady, No seriously I am going to check them for leaks tommorow at the river. lol-Les

Great step in training, it sounds like you have a dog who has figured out it is a team game, thats huge. Are there ay retriever traing clubs near you? Hooking up with amateur trainers who hunt and hunt test their dogs is a great way to get training tips and have somebody to set up simple test. You throw for their dog and they throw for yours. But watch out or you might get hooked and end up investing all of your free time and money into your dogs.

BTW your subject title scared the he!! out of me.

Me too, I thought, oh no, now what? Not something to some elses dog.

Congratulations to you and Sobe. Fun milestone to reach. I can just see her right now. almost smiling at you showing off what she's figured out. Go have fun now.

Congadulations Sobe.Sound like your getting Leslie trained pretty good. Now show him that blind retrieve stuff you have in your mind.

sorry for the subject but I didn't think about it like that. I have had a ball while we do our mini sessions. Sobe has moved to training in the front yard and I have a nice field to start doing our 100 and 200 yard retrieves.

I know the feeling, Leslie! I have had six of these lovable, anvil headed duckdogs and they have all been that way. Ya come to the reality that you have the dumbest dog on the planet, then one day they act like they knew it all along and were just testing you to see if your serious.

You couldn't have put it any better! My wife did the throwing for Sobe today and she was like wow. I wonder why she wouldn't do that before? I am taking it all one day at a time, trying to enjoy the work so far. It's like I have a new dog with her old personality which is great.

"they act like they knew it all along and were just testing you to see if your serious."

Boy, isn't that the truth. Some days I wonder if Otto isn't smarter than I am and just doesn't let on so he won't hurt my feelings.
