Something went horribly wrong here...

So my wife gave me the green light to look into getting a new boat that I could use for duck hunting (layout) and some fishing. I found a few locally to look at and she didn't seem to be to impressed with them. She decided she wanted something with a bit more diversity. So I found one for sale that was rather large...a 28' Contessa, I sent her over the info merely as a joke asking if that would suit her needs...bad idea!! "Oooo, I like that" was her response to my JOKE. I promptly told her that was way to much boat for my needs and she pretty much made it clear that was the type of boat she had in mind. She also made it clear that HER life doesn't revolve around duck hunting and that wouldn't be taken into consideration any longer. Great!

So I continued my search for something a bit more manageable for me and would also satisfy her wants/needs. So here's what we settled on...my new duck boat...Um, fishing boat. It's a 23 foot Trophy Walk Around. I had it out for a test drive last night in some 3 footers on Lake Ontario and it seemed to handle really well. We'll use it for perch fishing and drifting for walleyes this season on Lake Erie. My plan is to have it rigged up with downriggers for next season and go after King Salmon on Lake Ontario. There goes the savings account! I know it's not a Grady or Whaler, but it will suit my needs and get me some much needed experience under my belt until the day we can afford something bigger / better. We're picking it up this Sunday on our way back from climbing in the Adirondacks.

"The best laid schemes..."

From what I have heard about Lake Erie walleyes if your wife is willing to go fishing for them I'd be happy. That is a nice looking sporty boat.

nice boat steve. if your looking for info and gear sign up to
lakeontariounited.com. there is tons of good info for salmon and trout fishing and gear for sale
on the sight.

You poor thing...wow, she just isn't thinking fair now is she. Well seeing your life does revolve around duck hunting..you're going to have to look for another boat for when it's too cold for her to be out in that boat. Just sayin..

Wow what a great layout boat tender! Just set up a bracket on the swim platform........
I used to run salmon charters on Lake Ontario. There is not much else in freshwater that can fight like a King salmon. However before the Kings run you can have lots of fun mid-lake going for steelhead. Enjoy!

I said it before I'll say it again, I see Walleye and Salmon in my future. Oh and thanks, to! Jodi (wife) now wants to know why we only have duck boats. oooh, thats nice, I think is what her response was. Nice boat, buddy.

Nice boat Steve.
Can't tell you how many times I was out perch fishing on the lake with my 14' aluminum. We would see a Trophy and I would tell whoever I was with that,if I got a big boat that's the one I'd get!!
Your wife has good taste! John

Well I would bet that would be the only Trophy with a camo paint scheme on Lake Erie...probably any of the Great Lakes. She's more interested in getting after some perch, although she likes the eyes too. Hopefully my son takes to the boat and he gets some interest in learning how things run.

Sam...I did check out that LOU website. There looks to be a lot of good info on there. I'm sure I will be frequenting that for a while trying to learn the ropes of fishing for Kings. I've always just went on a Charter and sat back...I suppose I should have been taking notes.

Dani, Al, Ron, Fran - It's not a DUCK boat though. I still need to upgrade my duckboat. I'm kind of in the doghouse already for having too many boats (or flotation devices as she puts it) around the house. I have to sell my kayaks to make room...they don't get much use anyway. I'll keep plugging away at upgrading the duck boat. It may take another season or two though.

Gene...As soon as we get it all set up at the dock I'll be calling you and Jodi to come on up and do some fishing. This will make it easier for you to talk her into buying another boat...just don't sell your duckboats man!

Kim...using the swim platform to transfer hunters to the layout...now that's a thought. I agree with those Kings...nothing like dead silence then hearing one of your rods start screaming with a big king on the other end. We have a great steelhead fishery here on Lake Erie too...just no kings to speak of. I'll get some practice with them before we target the kings.

John...You'll have to come on out for a ride too when I get it ready to roll. I still need to get together with you for one of those North Bay whistles anyway. I certainly would not want to be out on the main lake in a 14 footer...that's one reason we opted for something a bit bigger.

Anyway, no complaints on the new boat from me...other than I still need a new duckboat. Can't wait to wet the hull and get it all settled in.

Looks like a nice boat for fishing the big lakes.

I went through a similar debate with my wife when I bought the Alaskan last fall. She wanted a "family boat" with cushy seats and bright colors. Fortunately for me our family includes three boys that like to hunt and fish. I opted for the drab color instead of the camo paint scheme to keep it more neutral. I also told her that the upgraded pedastal seats are very ergonomic and that the four stroke is quieter and more user friendly. She's not convinced, but I hope that she gets out in it a bit this summer and has fun. I'd like to get the kids out tubing once the water warms up a bit.

Good luck with the boat(s)!

Hey Steve, I think that boat will be a little hard to hide on the eastern shore. Unless you put a beacon on top and disguise it as a lighthouse maybe?

Nice boat, Dude! Please have your wife call my wife and maybe some of that, "we need another boat" juju will rub off....

John...the Alaskan is what I really wanted. Those are some really nice boats. I'm sure your wife will enjoy it once she gets in it. Fortunately I doubt I'll have to invest in tubing gear. The kids are pretty much too busy for that with college/Navy/work and the oldest just moved to Florida.

Tom...That just might work, But I think I'll stick to bringing the sneakboat down for now. By the way, just put in for vacation Dec. 18 - 20. I don't see any reason it won't be approved so I'm all but locked in for the trip down again.

Ryan...Just bring your wife over and a nice calm day...we'll get her convinced.

Congratulations Steve!

I've been looking at basically the same rig for a while too. It may not be the highest quality rig out there, but I like the lines, interior room, comfort and all.

While I am a couple hours away... hint... hint... hint...

You'll have a lot of fun chasing Perch with that rig. 'Eyes and Steelhead/Salmon too. Half the fun will be rigging her the way you'll want.

Cool Deal!

Jon

Are you heading to the usual East Coast spot in December?

Just throw some of that Visqueen over the top and you'll have a layout. Or, maybe you do the anti camo thing and just pretend you are fishing and the ducks will swarm around you. Sort of like being out on a golf coarse, geese and ducks don't even give golfers the time of day as they see them all the time and know they are harmless.
