Southbay duckboat restoration project

Rich:
Great Job on the refinish. The side flaps seem to be wide. My South Bay Boat original side flaps are 7 1/2" in width. Width of the side flaps is important in the fact when you add razor grass it adds weight. The wider the side flaps & extra grass will add weight & will affect a quick opening on incoming birds.

Dave.... the flaps on my boat (similar to a Southbay) are almost 12 inches. I actually like them wider as I agree with Tim, they help to shield you from the wind. I routinely hunt with the grass flaps set at a 45 degree angle, so I basically sit inside a grass "teepee" with my head sticking out from my eyes up. I have had no trouble throwing open the grass flaps when ready to shoot, my elbows pretty much do it automatically, I don't even think about it. In fact, if the flaps were smaller, it might be more difficult to throw them open for me. Just my .02 cents.

Chris:
Each to his own, I have hunted with the original 7 1/2" flaps for over 20 years, gives me more freedom, I guess it has become natural over time. All of you did a great restoration on the South Bay, she never looked you good. Are you going to install the Oak Grass Rails on the side flaps & along the sides at some point.

I think he has those done already, stop over if you want to see it. It's at my father's house.
