First dove brood of the year. Probably the one I banded that nested on my porch all last summer. This nest started in late February at the latest. Stuck this one in the wreath for the night so a cat didn’t snag it on the porch

Our Brant on Long Island always headed North around mid-May (from my years back in the 20th century). No point getting to the High Arctic too soon. I do not know if the warming Arctic has shifted the timing of this grand species.

Just saw lots of Mallards and Blacks on a favorire beaver marsh - and a few Greenwings, Woodlies and Wigeon. Last week's Ringnecks may have moved on.

Here in Coastal VA, they seem to be one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave. The black ducks are everywhere. A lot of them nest right here on the shore anymore.
