Stable canoe/ small duckboat

I have two teenage boys and primarily hunt small waters. Has anyone hunted out of a Scott Canoe "Duckboat"? The company claims they are the most stable canoe in it's class. I don't see any dealers for Scott Canoes in the midwest as I think they are manufactured in Canada.

What other squareback canoe designs would you recommend for safety (primarily) and functionality? We would need a craft w/ the load capacity of at least 800 pounds.

Thanks,

Brian (Minnesota)

Brian:

I've fished out of a Scott Duck Boat, and also out of their square stern canoes. Great boats, very stable, but definitely in the boat class rather than the canoe class, IMHO. Think trailer and motor, not car top and paddles.

A friend, a large lab, and I have fished in a Duck Boat while anchored in fast current, all standing and walking around the boat, with absolutely no worries about tipping. I believe he drives it with an 8 horse outboard, which is plenty to haul the three of us upstream against a current I don't like to paddle against.

I believe his is the 14' deep version.

I know several folks who own the Scott Duckboat. They all love it.

I used to own a Scott Canoe that was one of the best canoes I have paddled. They are made in northern Ontario, near New Liskeard, by a company called Mid-Canada Fiberglass. I visited the factory many times over the years beginning when I lived in New Liskeard as a kid.

I think his was glass. Looking at their website, you don't save a lot of weight with the Kevlar model.

I'm not sure where he got his, but know of at least 2 Scott Canoe dealers in Maine. 2 Rivers Canoe in Millinocket sells a ton of their square stern canoes, which are also very stable boats. http://www.tworiverscanoe.com/scott.html

I think Scott will ship, too, but it may cost you.

Looks like there are dealers in ME, CT, NY and Florida, and just about everywhere in Canada.

Build a KARA or Robber and you will have taught them a skill, have a load hauler like not many others, and it is stable like crazy.

Modify it to suit your set up.

Gheenoe, out of titusville fl.makes several models.
They are great boats and I've been in many.Very popular down here.
Not sure about the 800# capacity.
Good Luck.
