There was a time in the not too distant past when Penna. put one million hunters into the woods for the opening day of deer. Those days are long gone. Would have been nice to see what the average hunter age is. It's probably right up there.
Yep, growing up in NEPA in the 70s-80s, if I remember correctly, there were more hunters in the woods on opening day of deer season than in any other state.
Had more trappers too than just about anywhere. Competition for trapping access was a tough game, if you didnt know the landowners well snd starting talking to them in early summer, odds are someone beat you to it.
From 1964 until 2010 (moved to western NY in 2010) I hunted every deer gun season in PA. First day became a holiday in some schools long after I graduated. When hunting the first 2 days one had to be very creative with "excuses". Even during college years some profs would warn students or say they would have tests, etc. on that day. No matter, I still went hunting.
The amount of shooting on those first days by over a million hunters is legendary and true. Vastly different between then and now in many ways.
Yep, we had the first day of buck and first day of doe season off from school as a holiday.
From shooting time, for about 2 hours, it was a pretty constant shooting in all directions.
Does drives would sound almost like combat.
