Subaru advice

Any Subaru Forester or Outback owners on here? Looking at both.... not sure if I should spend the extra $ for the auto trans vs the 6 speed stick. Owned a Subaru wagon 30 years ago and it was a great little ride. Handled great in all kinds of slop.

The forester has a little more usable room. I have an 04 with 175,000 auto trans. I can fit my sled in the back with the seats down.

Owner of three Subaru outbacks since 1998. 225k on the first one without any major issues other than frequent headlight replacements; 150k on the 2006; three wheel bearing replacements and one front axle, frequent front headlight replacements also. (The local dealer confided that the wheel bearings and front end parts were now being made in China-- don't know whether true or not.) 2013 no problems yet. My wife will not a clutch car so we had autos. All three handled well on the road, and in the slop of which we have a lot here in upstate NY.

We have a '14 Outback 4cyl automatic. I personally think the auto transmission is worth the money. That said, if owned a WRX it'd be a stick. Awesome vehicle.

I had 2 Foresters and loved them; my mother is on her second now. The only downside, especially on the older ones, was blown headgaskets, which were common once you got past about 125,000 miles. I blew the gasket in one of mine and chose to have the engine rebuilt because I liked the car so much. I'm told the newer engines are more reliable in that regard.

Mine served me well on Maine's logging roads, even fairly rough ones. Just remember there's no low range to get you unstuck . . . . .
