Sudan grass (sorghum)

The farmers who lease the field I hunt have switched half the acreage (30 total) over to Sudan grass for cattle. With ever warming winters the nephew thinks this is a better idea (the aunt thinks they need to stay corn). Anyways, how will this affect the hunting? Deer, ducks, geese? Anyone hunt over this stuff?

Best dove shoot I ever got in on was over a harvested sorghum field.
I would think the ducks and geese would love it.

I doubt they let a forage crop go to seed but you may have an opportunity to grow some winter forage for the critters after it comes off

You said Sudan, not sorghum, right?

I don't think you'll be happy with the results. Can't imagine hunting birds in Sudan grass unless you have a bunch of pheasants around. Might be good for deer?

Yes they told me Sudan, not sure how it's different than sorghum. And yes they cut it for "hay." Looks like it's regrowing again, so maybe for deer. I'm hoping the geese land in it even just to access the corn. It's about 3" again

Sudan grass is used primarily as forage, hay or cover crop. Since it has been mowed once already I doubt it would produce any type of seed. Most commercial varieties are a hybrid which doesn't produce seed. It will most likely be mowed/harvested at least once more. Geese may feed on it as it resprouts. My experience is with it used as a cover crop which is not mowed and provides excellent winter cover for pheasants.
