Managed to sneak off this afternoon with Thomas. We were supposed to go buy a Christmas Tree but argued the point we can buy a tree after work this week. You can't hunt after work. Michelle bought it so we loaded the gear and were out the door about lunchtime.
Thomas now has a ditty bag packed with the stuff he needs for hunting so he can be ready pretty quick. Since he's gotten fast at putting his waders on too he is becoming easier and easier to have along. I know those colder days are still going to be too much but a day like today is perfect for him.
I've not had much chance to scout this season so we decided to head to the BB Comer area and look around. Much to my total surprise there was only one other boat at the launch and they were fishing. Never saw another duckhunter. I can't remember the last time I launched on the main part of the lake and didn't see at least a couple other groups. Bet it doesn't happen again all season.
We didn't see very many ducks. A few gadwall mixed in the quite a few coots and just a couple ringnecks. We jumped several dozen near one of my favorite spots so we quickly tossed out a few dozen decoys and stashed the boat. The gadwall never came back but a lone ringneck tried to strafe the decoys. One shot pinwheeled him ( I love it when you hit a duck and they pinwheel touching every extremity before coming to a stop) which was good given how poorly I shot on Saturday. Thomas got a big old kick out of it.
We hung around a bit longer but with nothing moving went looking some more. Thomas tried his best to shoot coots on the water with his pellet gun but they were a bit out of range.
I Didn't fire another shot but had a great time just the same. If only it was next weekend already, we'd do it again tomorrow.
