Take the grass off the boat?

Do you? Or do you leave it on and just touch it up next season?

I've always cleaned my boat up, but last fall I put it away, got distracted by other things, and it's sitting in the barn with all of last year's rice still on it. Any reason not to leave it and save time grassing next fall?

Guys that use iron grass [local term] cover their boats and touch up the boat each year. This stuff really wears well. I use marsh grass which is what the marshes I hunt on are. Match the hatch... Add seaweed or what ever is around the area.

Jeff~

Salt hay (Spartina patens) will definitely last a couple of years IF you can store it under cover. I think you're on the right track to just touch it up until it starts to break down.

All the best,

Funny story! My buddy John Van Houten stored his boat under my tractor shed one summer. I have a few cows on my land, seems the grass John had on his boat was just the right flavor for the cows. They ate every speck off the boat! Rich

The answer for me would depend on the construction of the boat.

Fiberglass = leave it and freshen it next season.
Wooden, fibergalsss over wood, etc. = remove it so that no moisture is held and anything needing attention is seen and addressed.

I had a similar experience. When I moved north from Long Island, a friend hauled my Sneakbox up for me. It went by way of a dairy farm in western Mass. The cows enjoyed not just the Salt Hay but also the canvas cockpit cover - only the brass grommets remained on the boat....

All the best,

Well, I may need the mulch for the garden . . . .

It's in a dry spot, but Dave's suggestion about getting it off the decks is a consideration.

Killerweed or similar synthetic grass Is all I use as you can see my high box is under reconstruction after about 3 years of hard use including summer bowfishing and striper fishing I'm also redoing the wood grass rails with a light plastic plastiwood and stainless hardware.

When I had my boat in a garage I got a few seasons on my grass and fresh'nd up the flap boards when the season opened. Now I pull the grass and keep the good stuff in a garbage can "just in case" I don't have a chance to get out and cut before the Long Island opener. That grass worked well for the past couple of openers...
