The Tennessee river appears to make a loop thru alabama--does it flow North or South or are there two sources coming into the state? Not NDR but just curious.

In Alabama it flows North to South and then South to North. Guntersville sits at it's southernmost location. The river itself, off the top of my head, is approx 650 miles long and starts near Knoxville where the Little TN and French Broad Rivers join. From there it increases in size, and runs through a series of TVA locks and dams until it empties into the Ohio which flows to the Mississippi. TVA covers 7 states and I think 30 or so dams on the TN and it's tributaries. The entire lock and dam system is the largest and most complex in the world and makes TVA the largest energy supplier in the US. They turned flood ravaged agricultural areas with no electricity into industrialized centers and brought unprecedented growth to the area. Most of the flood plain is open to the public creating some good freelance opportunities. However, in recent years as populations have grown and cities expanded their boundaries hunting areas have taken a hit and there is friction between the various recreational users of the river system. If you live in the Tennessee Valley

Thanks for the geography lesson. I can remember some of the battles they had getting those dams in.
