the burden

i used to run a black dog
he was tough and mean and downright hard

he was a freight car load of energy
a freight car load of fur and mud
and burrs embedded

he was a tripping tongue
through blackberries

on his mission
he never lost scent or sight after what we could knock down with the scattergun

i laughed and called him on
and watched the thicket roll and sway with the burden of his enthusiasm
and i felt good that i had a dog to walk with in the fields at all

the black dog is out there somewhere in the willow tangles
in the blackberries and briars

pushing in birds that i hoped might be there
for me to work the new dog

red and wild and ready

he is heaving breath
tongue tripping
wild and red and without end or meter

on his mission
he never looses scent or sight after what we can knock down with the scattergun

and i laugh and call him on

and watch the thicket roll and sway with the burden of his enthusiasm

i feel good that i have a dog to walk with in the fields again

Todd

I look forward to more tales as the season gets under way. I hope you enjoy seeing my decoys half as much as I enjoy your writing.

This site is such a great place for us to share our talents and life experiences.

Thanks!

Todd,
you made me laugh. I worked with a guy who called his girlfriend that! I think they are divorced now.

Great job with the birds and the new brush mover. Looks like the Red Dog is fitting right in.

Todd, every time I read any of your works I always feel like saying, "Let the Season Begin". Loved that story of the black dog! What a great picture.

Nice Todd, good to see a post from you.

That is one pretty dog, looks the same color as the pheasant feathers.

Great Todd, thanks for sharing. I was wondering when we might see a new red dog adventure, missed your posts. Looking forward to more.
