The Huckleberry!!!!

Well after long thought and encouragement, from the duckboats crew, here he is Huckleberry aka Huc. Yes, he's a Pudlepointer, and he's a character for being 8 weeks old. Killed a field mouse this morning and swallowed it before I could say no, if that would have mattered anyway. Gave him a goose wing yesterday and he pranced around the yard with his trophy. The reason I got a versatile dog was I spend 7 months a year in N D., and figured I should do some upland hunting. View attachment Resized_20180825_082718_1628.jpeg

John,
Can you tell us more about this breed? I never heard of it.

How many breeders in the US are there?

Range of cost of pups?

Great looking dog.

Look at that cuuuuuuuuuutie!!!!! And check it out, yet another pointy dog on this site. If folk aren't careful, this will turn into a pointy dog place instead of a duck place (I can think of 3 pointy dogs on this site now....they're gonna slowly take over).

I love his beard. MORE PICTURES!!!!!

Larry thanks for the interest but I would be typing for days, just Google Pudelpointer. Also you'll be able to see breeders, not many. I researched this pup for 2 months and was impressed. The breed started in Germany and made it's way over via Canada.
Where out primitive camping at Lone Tree WMA right now, 33,000 acres. Next to a corn field and the scents are overwhelming to him. Thanks. The breed is also excellent swimmers and retrievers. I figure he will be hunting waterfowl 80 percent and 20 upland. Price runs between 1500. and 2000.

And so it begins..

Cute puppy! I think your hands will be full for a couple years. Enjoy every second. Good luck with him, and don't be shy about posting pictures!

John,
sounds like good fit for you. I too have looked into this breed, since I similar hunting needs as you. It would be good to hear how this works out for you. I have always had a GSP, which I have had mixed results with waterfowl. Their heart is in the right place but the cold tolerance leaves a little bit to be desired. I went with a lab this round, but ended up with good dog with a bad case of epilepsy. I may be looking into a new pup when the GSP passes, and may going with pudelpointer.

Good for you John and congratulations. Our Rufus is 3.5 yrs and is the the most fun of any dog we have brought into the family. Unfortunately haven't gotten him into any ducks yet due to high river water. He is an eager swimmer and does not like hot weather, i think he will make a good duck dog.
Started him on pheasants at 7 mos.He pointed and retrieved about 30 pheasants his first season to date he is over 100 birds. I can't remember a lost cripple.
Good luck and best wishes.
Bill.
