The joys of a German dog

I've been running Deuce on a lot of wild pheasants this preseason to get him into shape. One thing I've learned in our almost 3 years together is that not all points lead to a bird. I'm just glad that so far no striped furry critters have been pointed. I'd have been in serious trouble had this been a skunk.
Sorry for my excessive use of the word 'fricken' in this video. It's a little hard to see but it does jump up over the grass for a second.
Deuce pointing a raccoon

We do still find a few pheasants... some even play nice and hold for my lowly Ugly Dog. :)

Deuce on some pheasants

Hope to get him a few waterfowl retrieves this weekend and then start thinking even more seriously about pheasants.

I watched the second one on the pheasants. He is looking great, Tim. You have to be so proud of him. Best of luck when pheasant season opens. When does it open for you?

We have a resident only 3 day season that runs Oct 8-10. It's only on public land. Depending on the weather its a bit of a crap shoot. Then on the 15th the regular season opens. I think it is shaping up to be a good but not great season numbers wise. That's actually not that bad of a thing, keeps some of the competition at home if they have to walk more then an hour to get a couple birds.
Yes I am very proud of him. He may not be a fully trained and steady bird dog but he produces. I suppose he'd be called a Meat Dog by most pointer folks and that's fine with me.

I hope you can get some more water down there for your season.

Man, that was really cool to watch. Great job training your pup, you can tell he really loves his job.
Raccoon vid was frickin' funny!

If those are recent videos then the difference in your cover is stunningly different compared to here in Montana.....

Nothing much and green like that where I am....the WRP property is as close as we could come to that and it's sparse and spare compared to what I see in your videos.....off the WRP's were finding dry sloughs and heavily grazed rangeland...CRP losses have been huge over the past year and we continue to see the drift prevention cover strips being ripped out and burned in gian bonfires to make it easier for the ever increasing size of the heads on the combines to maneuver......

Lush cover doesn't get you Sharptails and Huns but it is nice to have for ditch chickens who's season fast approaches....looks to me that your Ugly Dog will be ready for that when it comes....

Steve,
Those are both videos from the past week. We started the year wet, then we got very dry and hot, now in the past month we have been getting a lot of rain. Most of the cover is good but not as dense overall as last year. The videos are from public land right along a river. It's always thick there. It's more fun to hunt a little thinner cover so I can see the dog more but this time of year they don't hold well in that.

Same story with crp around here...but what is left is making for great hunting. The conditions have been right but we just don't have the amount of cover we use to. We no longer have all the waterways and weedy fence lines either. When land prices quadrupled a few years ago it changed the landscape. With $2.60 corn I'm wondering what will happen around here. Sooner or later something has got to give.

I had been wondering if you were out West, I hope you and B are finding a few birds.
