i walked along the dike
& thought upon
a memory
of a hound
strong and unstoppable
once upon a time
i called him today & he came to me
it was strange and lonely
bitter sweet
he followed me into the brush
rolling in the grass
chasing his nose into impossible thickets of briars
rocking the berries loose so that he could eat them all
splashing in the water
& shaking it all out on me
i laughed for a moment
autumn flowed over me
cast out in leaves from ancient oaks
and giant maples
cartwheeling to the water below
falling free to begin the process all over
in clouds that looked like horses tails whipping a lazy sky
there was no way to stop it
it was death
but beautiful
and with meaning
i laughed for a few moments and let him go by the river
i knew id walk with him again soon
he ran to me under the big cottonwoods
licked my face soaking wet
and i had to dry my eyes on the shoulder of my shirt
before i could walk back up the hill
to go back to work
