tiller extension

I just resurrected a '73 9.5hp Evinrude for my broadbill. Changed the points, rebuilt the carb, built new motor mounts etc and it is running sweet in the rain barrel... I should have pictures of the painted unit up next week.

Does anybody have any suggestions for extending the tiller handle? There's no electronics in it and should be fairly simple. I was just wonder what others have done.

Thanks

The first one I did was out of a super stiff radiator hose with a piece of 1 1/4 full round in it...all hose clamped together. It was heavy and would flop down and get in the way when I pulled the boat around. The one I have now is an adjustable metal one that I cut down a bit, redrilled the pin hole and put back together..works pretty good.

I used a piece of thin aluminum tubing. Make a 6" lengthways cut in it so it will open up and go around the handle and then use a hose clamp to hold it in plance. I also coated it with rocker panel spray to give it texture which made it easier to grip

Cabelas has a few, including one that has a nuckle that can be locked at cruising speed.Minn Kota has an 18" and 30",which I use on the MLB wigeon w/elec power.Works fine.

I bought the adjustable model by Cabelas. Works well..

Eric Patterson had a sweet solution for making making your own tiller extension, as I recall it. He sent me pictures and instructions. This probably goes back six years or so. Eric, do you still have those pictures??

Jim

I was doing a search for tiller extensions, as I recalled a discussion in the past.

Eric - were you able to find your instructions/pics from the one you built?

Thanks,
Ryan

I use a pvc coupling that fits over the handle and is glued to a piece of pvc pipe. The coupling is thick enough to make threads in which I screwed in a 1/2in. stainless bolt. The bolt turns easily making it removable in a flash. I'll try to post a pic soon.

This system worked pretty good. I replaced with an extension from Minn Kota that is less bulky and like it a tad better. Not usre if the Minn Kota one is available. The below uses polyethylene pipe, 3M grip tape, and a few pipe clamps.

Thanks guys!

Nice pics Eric, you've also given me an idea for securing the motor to the boat. I was debating about drilling a hole for this on the motor bracket.

Ryan,

Another option is to simply move to Minnesota. No need to secure your motor in that state. Trolling for lost outboards is a Minnesota state approved pastime for when the duck aren't flying or the fish biting.

Ryan, here are the tiller extention pics. ABS pipe and coupling. Stainless steel bolt.
