Timing of water on fields

Guys at the duck club are giving me some good hearted grief about putting water on the rice and bean fields too early! Started pumping last week in NE Arkansas and we have a few thousand specks/snows and ducks eating it up. Season opens Nov 17th. I've always liked water on 2 weeks before season so birds could start using it. What's do all think? Would be nice to stage the water but would be tough to do on a level rice food.

Depends. If your the only thing wet in the area yes. If everyone around you is going to pump this week, the birds will scatter to the freshest water there is. We pumped a little early this year, because so much of the rice had resprouted... more green than grain, so the longer water is on it the better as it grows more invertbrets. didnt spend the money to flood another rice field that was burned to save some grain, or our field in beans... cause until we get some water to hold ducks, it wont matter.
Geese on your field aint a good thing. They trash all the stubble and eat all the grain, and poop everywhere. travis

Not much to add to that. We started getting water on our field this past Friday. One of the guys drove over yesterday and said he kicked 30 mallards out of the field. There were gadwalls on the resrvoir next door to it Saturday, and a couple flocks of specks flew over high...

Travis...how the heck are ya, you weejun-smackin' scoundrel?

Jumped gaddies out of a couple ditches this weekend... which is why i dont dine on early season gadwall. When they eat that ditch slime, they can stink the house up. By dec 15th or so, not much finer table fare flys. Everyone is waiting with anticpation on the first batch of gadwall fajitas of the year!
Im doing great rick. Had a little medical set back in sept, had a tia, which is basically a temporary stroke. Apprently, a big glob o bacon grease broke loose and cut the o2 off to some important parts of my brain. things like my eyes focusing and talking and what not. Anyway, the tests where done, and I dont have any brain, artery, or hart damage. Its like when I turned 18 and my criminal record was expunged... all that, and I aint done anything permanet. So their aint no pill, its just I got to do it. Since the last week of sept, i have lost 22 pounds, have not smoked (still dipping tho, cant do everything at once), barely drank, and gave up pork and red meat completely. I wanted to cut back on red meat, but its easier to just not do it, than try to do moderation. Im healthier and feel great. Tj just turned 15, and hes still my constant companion. He ran his first Grand with me in tulsa last month.. he went out early a little late on a whistle in a big big wind, but he did something 99% of the dog people in this world never have, ran his dog in a national event. Da Juice passed for the second time, making it him a Grand champion. Dog season is finally over, and getting ready for duciks, but my little training group had 3 new hrch dogs, and a Grand dog this fall, all that work was worth it. Still got one till opening day, and 1 to place, but its fixing to be just our dogs there... and aint said that since febuary! We're ahead on our duck season prep, really we could shoot in the morning if we had bought bullets yet... still got sunday and next friday to finish everything up. we're like everyone, waiting on some rain and cold to make our dreams come true! hope your doing well, and our paths cross again soon. travis
