the keel was more of the same, so i ground down what was necessary and sanded the whole thing for paint, filled deep scratches (that exposed glass) and holes with thick epoxy, and laid cloth along the keel with double layers offset over actual holes.

Nice work. Brings back memories of reviving an old aluminum canoe with broken ribs. My dad and I installed three new ribs... but hammering all those rivets for a watertight seal is probably where I lost much of my hearing. She still serves us well almost 40 years later. Good luck with yours!

Paul, how much epoxy do you think you will use total on the repairs? Also, did the former owner ever offer a description of how the damage was inflicted?

I didn't ask, my guess is poor construction.

I estimate about 24 oz of mixed up epoxy. Maybe 32. That's including the thickened up fillet material, etc.

Mighty fine restoration on both. It would be a pleasure to hunt & fish using either one, and Green is my favorite color.

Thank you! The moss green on mine is now dried flat and looks much better.

I'm only halfway through my restoration, more to come this week.

Brings back memories of a "free" Sawyer Cruiser that had been tied to a dock and one end came loose in a storm and wrapped it around the dock. OOPs. I got new gunnels from a shop here and pushed everything back into shape, glassed it up and then took some great advice to sell it before I paddled it. People who knew told me that I would sell our aluminum canoe and keep that one if I did try it. Took it to an auction and got twice what I expected from it.

That's kind of the plan, but I will probably use it this year on the abundant WMAs up here.
