Tragic news

Haven't hunted there lately, but used to spend a great many hours either in the layout boat or boat blind.

I've been reading and hearing about this for several days now.

Tragic indeed. So sad for his family.

Hopefully, somebody will learn from this and stay out of those situations.

Jon

Tragic is usually reserved for things beyond your control...a fluke accident perhaps. Life vest, life vest, life vest. If your life is not worth a $34.99 life vest from Cabelas then I feel sorry for your family

Very sad indeed...I've had my sneakboat there on the reservoir but just to run around, I've never hunted it. I know New York and PA both recently enacted a law that PFD's must be worn at all times on most vessels from Nov to April. Can't say for sure if this law would have helped these guys, but it certainly wouldn't have hurt. Does Ohio have a law like that yet?

McCullough, Kristan, and I watched 4 guys, a dog, and a ton of gear in a 14 foot johnboat run across the lake cutting across the current with not enough motor on Saturday. Conditions were rough with gusty wind. Not a damn one of them had on a lifevest. Same thing that 4 young men did on the same lake several years ago when three of them drowned. I have no idea what those people think. We had 4 guys in a 27'. Glad we do it the safe way. I'm rarely concerned on big water with our crew. We've been hunting together for almost 8 years now and have our routine down to a science.

I wonder if the Bill Clark from that article is the same one that frequents this site? Truly tragic.

I wondered the same, Eric. I believe Bill has a couple boys but I'm not sure how often he makes it up this way.

Not that I am aware of. Law like that wouldn't have kept them from sinking but it may very well have saved his life. They said about 10min before rescue crews arrived they didn't hear him yelling anymore. Not sure if it was a result of hypothermia at that point or just drowning.

I don't believe the Bill Clark quoted in the paper is related to 'our' Bill. I hunted with Bill a number of years ago and he was a little older than 35 then. He also lives down in southeastern Ohio.

Tom,

The Bill mentioned in the article wasn't the victim, rather a hunter who heard his cry's for help.

So so sad, I hate to hear that, a vest takes a minute to put on, it's just as important as having the boat and your gun, following the ratings for load weight and engine size is very important in preventing an accident, picking your days when on big water in small boats is the difference between coming home or not.

I use to hunt that lake in the mid 80's to mid 90's, with my sneakbox. ALWAYS wore a lifevest. Had some great hunts, but like ALL shallow lakes.it gets ugly real fast. Plus lots of obstacles, especially on the North End, where most of the waterfowl are. Very little room for Human Error of any kind. Sadly - between there, and Pymatuning, it was not uncommon for duck hunters to drown.
