Transom Question

Hi

I am about to purchase a 14ft Lazer sailboat to convert into a duck boat. I can get this for a very resonable price and I was thinking I would remove the decking and I would start from scratch with the fiberglass hull and build to my design based on the various boats seen on this site.

I know it will have to be strengthened and possibly altered so the angle is correct.

How easy is to do? What is the proper angle required and how high does the top of the motor mount need to be above the bottom of the stern.

I will be running a 9.9 Johnson on it if this helps.

Tks

Hi Brad,

I am not an expert, but I think I recall reading that the ideal transom angle is 15 degrees from vertical for a motor boat. perhpas someoen else could verify this?

I think you are right Charlie..15-18 degrees. As for how high the transom needs to be..a shortshaft engine is 15" and a longshaft is 20". You will want to check your motor and make the transom so the plate above the prop is 3/4-1" below the bottom of the boat.

I agree with all that Lee.That's why it's confusing when you say you have your motor mount all the way up,on your Wigeon.Unless, all the way up,IS 15".

However, did you need to modify the transom stem, in the case of the MLB Wigeon, to get the top of the transom 15" from the bottom of the boat?I would have to cut almost 4"
off the stem of the transom to get that measurement.

I have a question about the transom angle. Simply put, why 15-18 deg? Why not 0 or 5. Is it a performance issue. Is it just because it sets the motor back farther?

I set mine at 10 and I'm going to be done with it here in a couple weeks. You got me all nervous but I think I should be fine
Thanks,
Neal

Thanks guys for the help...The obvious question I should ask is there any reason to suspect this will not work? The hull of this sailboat looks almost exactly like an aluminum boat hull, relatively flat starting at the stern going to a v-hull 2/3rds of the way to the bow.

Does anyone who has done this have any transom/boat pixs they could share?

I was thinking about building the decking to somewhat resemble a cross between the estuary and a barnegat bay sneak boat...any advice is welcomed especially before I start spending the $$$$ and the time.

Tks
Brad
