I got my dog Jack all fitted with his neoprene vest today. I had to cut and fit a section of the chest area because it was way too big for him. It looks good now. The contact cement I used says full cure in 72 hours so I'll probably wait till next weekend to put it in the water.

I am hoping this gives him enough additional buoyancy, that he won't have as much difficulty keeping his nose out of the water.

Dave,

The other vest that Avery makes has handles on the top and a couple pods sewn into the sides with some type of boyant materaial. You could always buy a boat cusion pfd and cut it open and add some to his vest or just put it inside on the top of his back. Probably wouldn't go anywhere.

whats the name of that dog my son had a 3 legged dog ,called him tripod. tough because he was a setter everytime he went on point ,well you guessed it he fell over

Dave
That surgestion Ron as just made seems to be a good idear, and the more boyancy he has got, the more confidence he will get. the coat looks great and Jack looking good too.
Take cae and God bless

Its all about Building that Bond.

Dave,
great to see Jack all fired up to go. He looks like he recovered well.

I had a springer who lost his hind leg to a trap at one year old. He lived to be 14 and was one of the best dogs we ever owned.

Nice job on the vest.

PS We did call him tripod but he didnt fall over often and he never quit. It was a lesson to us all.

Dave ,

Looks like a good fit , i purchased a vest for my lab that has floataion on the top to keep her upright and give her more bouancy , it seems to work great , i am sure you have been through alot with your dog and she will never give up that desire to share a day in the field or marsh with you , have a great season !!

The vest itself is about 3mm neoprene but I already have what I'll use if i want more buoyancy. I have several old pairs of 5mm neoprene waders. I can add one or more panels to the vest as required. I do want to keep the bulk to a minimum so as to not create additional drag.

Chris,

The panels will add the same bulk regardless of whether they are inside or outside. The additional bulk is what will create more drag. Or am I missing something?

Unless you stitch completly to the edge and over, the panel edge will flair out at the stitching. Whereas, the panel sewn to the interior will maintain the unbroken smooth surface of the vest.

Chris,

I'd add the panels in the same manner as when I altered the vest.

By trimming the inside edges and gluing with contact cement, the outside edges pull down and seam blends right in and the is no edge to either rub on the dog or catch the water. The edges are smoother than my crude drawing would indicate. :>)
