Tuckerton Show

I just heard from my partner Dave Enos, and he said that the Tuckerton Show was awesome. He met a lot of great people, and really had a great time. I'm already working on rearranging my schedule for next year so I can make it.

He said to pass on a special thanks to Mark of the Mighty Layout Boys. I'd told Dave about the great guys in this industry like Lou Tisch, Dave and Mark but he got to see it for himself and really enjoyed talking to him.

Thanks,
Kirk

Hi Kirk,

Yes, the show was awesome. This was my first time to Tuckerton and I am already making plans to be there next year with my own booth. I was diagonally across for your setup and got to check out your boats, decoys, and calls. You had a great exhibit. I had my carving stand going next to my friend's booth and a bunch of people stopped by to check out what I was doing. That was cool. A few older gentlemen stopped to talk about cork, white cedar, drawknives, and the like. It was great. I got to meet Mark Rongers for the first time. He is a good guy, very friendly. I met Jode Hillman as well. Also a great guy and his decoys were sweet. I saw Jim Higgins from Maine - he was there with his cork decoys and calls. All of the boats and decoys together in one spot was truly amazing. I've never been to something like that before. It was huge.

Does anyone have suggestions for places to stay in or around Tuckerton itself? We stayed at a hotel that was about 40 minutes away. Next year, I'd like to get a place that is a lot closer.

See you next year!

Best,
Nate G.

The show was outstanding as usual. From what I understand other shows are trying to model theirs after Tuckerton. I picked up my new David Clark Estuary there. It recieved a second place ribbon as well. Great job Dave and thank you again. It is a must see show for the serious hunter or carver.

Wow that was your Estuary? I got there super early(6am) and walked around almost by myself and met Dave. He expalined the boat and the materials. It was one of those things where you just rub your fingers on because you see and feel the quality of the workmanship. I'm sure the boat will bring you years of adventures. Good luck and enjoy.

Nate & Kirt, Yes we might be over taxed and over populated, but we do have a great waterfowler state and a history that goes back to the 1800's. I know Mark Rongers and his wife enjoyed themselves, even though Elaine heard enough duck/goose calling for the next 2 years. Elaine and Mark are a tribute to the industry and sport. And I and my friends look forward to seeing them again. For those interested in keeping track of Tuckerton Seaport, go to www.tuckertonseaport.org and surf the site. I'm sure their will be pics posted by those who attended, I forgot the camera.. duh ! The dog trials(open to all) were heavily attended as was the BBSB clay shooting contest. And Tom Knapp gave a great show as he always does. Oh, I forgot that to mention my friend Chad Seymour won the N.J. State Champion Duck calling contest again representing RNT calls and he will be attending Arkansas representing New Jersey for the WORLD TITLE, GOOD LUCK Chat and CONGRATS again.

Hi Nate, I don't think I actually introduced myself to you this weekend but did talk to you a couple of times about where you got your cork from and about Duckers Day, (just a little more of a turn out down in Tuckerton). Where abouts did you stay? Last year my hunting partner and I went, it was the first time for both of us. We stayed at a motel in Long Beach which is about 15-20 minutes north of there. It was $100 a night(off season rates).
This year he couldn't make it so my wife said she would go if we stayed closer to Atlantic City. We drove down on Friday and stayed at a timeshare resort in Brigatine just north of Atlantic City. It worked out great, we went to Tuckerton in the morning(20 minute ride) walked around, found a couple of deals, and had lunch at Skeeters ,the crabs were great. Went back talked to Dave Clark for awhile, fell in love with that Estuary he builds.
We left around 3:00 and headed to Atlantic City. She did a little shopping then we hit the casinos hoping to win a little to put towards that Estuary. Needless to say I didn't put a down payment when I got back there Sunday. Dave did win first place for his new layout boat, and I think second for the restored sneak box he had there. I'm not sure what these judges are looking for, but for the second year in a row his Estuary came in second. Both years I've gone I thought his was the best built and best looking hands down. I told him it was because he was from the wrong state. Had some crab cake sandwiches from the food court and said my sad goodbyes to the Estuary and told her maybe next year. We both had a great time, my wife even wants to go back next year.

Hi Phil,

Yes, I remember you. It was good to see and talk with you. Glad your wife had a good time. My wife would probably like to come down and hang out too. We'll have to see next year.

Good luck with those scoters. Let me know if you need a pattern for the silos. I could copy mine and send you a pattern. Just shoot me your addy.

Nate

Phil, Don't mean to rub it in but I now own that Estuary. The first place ribbon went to Bob Frick's all white cedar BBSB. In my opinion Bob builds the best all cedar box out there. He is a true craftsman and a gentlman for sure. It must have been a toss up for the judges. I personally wanted the Estuary for the extra room and the glass hull. I could'nt be happier. My props to both Dave and Bob for turning out such a high quality product. Phil, I hope that you get yours soon.

When I said I didn't know what the judges were looking for - I meant just that. I DON'T know what the judges are looking for. It was not meant to slight the judges or Bob Frick's boat. I, myself, if I was going to leave there with a sneakbox - would've left with yours. I wish you a lot of luck. I'm sure the boat will be a great asset for your season. Be sure to let us know how it's going and post some pictures of it in action. Thanks.

Nate,

Yes, the show was great. Sorry I didn't get a chance to stop and chat when I saw you but I had my twin 3 year olds with me and visits were sparse and short when they happened. There is a campground about 10 minutes north of the park on Rt 9 called the Sea Pirate. My family and friends stay there for the weekend during the show. Nice place and reasonable. As most of my friends have booths at the show, well I think you get the picture. They have a website but I'm at a loss for the address right now. I would book now as they fill up for that weekend. Hope to catch up with you next year.

Mike

Nate,
Great meeting you and the other folks from the site as well. I only wish I could of had more time to check out the other vendors at the show................I saw you carving up in the front of the park and looked like a great way to show traditional skills....................Tuckerton is always a blast and a great way to spend the weekend!

Nate, was that you working on a tan cork decoy, mounted on that neat swivel vise.I have a heck of a time remembering all the people I meet
for the first time.We talhed about your hollow cedar dekes and painting.
More sneak boats there than anywhere on the planet,(I'll bet)Daves was tops.

Nate , Thanks for the offer on the pattens but I already have some. The information I was going to use from that sled post you had was the measurements for the cross pieces. What kind of glue would you recommend for putting joining the heads and bodies of the e-allen decoys, I don't know if I told but I picked up a Eider while I was there too. I just need to mount the head and paint it.

Hi Joe,

Yep, that was me. Good to meet and talk with you. I am looking forward to next year already. Hope to see you there again.

Take care,

Nate G.

Hi Phil,

I've used the marine bondo in the past but that always seems to crack. I would use thickened West System epoxy with a long stainless steel screw and a washer. I know a guy who has been using some other stuff called P7 something or other. It is gray, almost looks like cement when it dries. I'll see if I can find the name of it. Those eider are nice. When I had my buffles I would drill a small hole through the bill up into the head at an angle and then push a small finish nail in and close the hole with epoxy. I snapped off a few bills, mostly my kids picking them up and then dropping them on the floor. The nail seemed to help. You can do the same on the tails, just use a longer nail or a small wood dowel.

Have fun.

Nate

Hi Nate,
Glad you enjoyed your visit!
As mentioned, the Sea Pirate campground is a good spot - you can bring your RV or rent a cabin.
It's a few miles north on HWY 9.
I camped with the family this summer and enjoyed it.
There are a couple of public boat ramps to the bay within a couple of miles as well.
Nice people and gated entrance.
