Turkey calls

Turkey season starts in two weekends and it has me thinking about turkey calls and pulling all of my calls out and all that fun stuff. It also got me thinking about one of my favorite calls of Steve's that one of us lost somewhere in the woods of FL. It was a pot call and the top surface was glass, slate and copper. I never was able to find one to replace it and I look from time to time to see if something has come up. But I got to wondering about how it might have been made and that got me to thinking about making turkey calls.....

Soooooo long meandering way of getting around to asking my question...

Is there a book or resource that anyone recommends for making turkey calls? I am intrigued with the idea of making a couple and would like to read up on it to see if it is something I would like to do.
 
Were I wanting to get into it in this day and age, I'd look at youtube. I know there are parts available on ebay, I've run across them. There is this guy Jode hillman from NJ that makes his own calls, he may have some tips if you bugged him.

You might also consider either a box call or a wing bone call. Both of these can be made with almost zero cost for materials. I'll second the recommendation to check out YouTube for instructions.

I've probably heard of this Jode dude....likely lusted over some of his calls....

thanks a lot y'all....actually hadn't thought of youtube...I still like to read instructions so youtube is usually my last thought on "how tos" unless something is broken
 
I agree make a wingbone call.

And a Box Call is a must have. When I lived in Upstate NY I taught my neighbors grandson how to use a Box Call--Lynch's Foolproof. I taught him in the car during wee hours of the morning on our way to the hunt in Delaware County. He called in a gobbler and I killed it. I had to work hard to convince the kid that it doesn't always go so easy!!

Wingbone call is different than most hunters throw at the bird, sometimes it tickles their fancy when nothing else will. They also tickle my lips when I haven't practice on one for a while. If you kill a turkey it is a nice souvenier to make for yourself. A domestic bird will work too.

Lol...... it's a dark path, don't start down it! In all seriousness I started out similar to you curious and I wanted to try my hand at it. And it turned into some thing that I really enjoy very much. Even coming up with a few that are really one of a kind. Feel free to give me a call or send me a message if you want to pick my brain on some of the lathe turn stuff like pot calls and strikers etc
Here's a couple boxes, cherry Burl pots I sent to Florida, and some of my oyster calls.
