Turkey hunting Duck Style

As I posted a few days ago. Turkey Season here in New York State opens the first of May. I like hunting turkeys the duck hunters way. I get up in the early morning just like for duck hunting. I like to get into my duck boat and head out onto the water. I like pulling up to the shore along wood lines and call from my boat. If I get a gobble, I get out of the boat and set up and take some cover. If I can't get out I stay in the boat and call the bird to me. I have done very well over the years. Turkeys love to roast near water. They feel really safe from predators when they are near or over water. If its a high tide and I can get way back into they bays. Then its really on. Because there are spots along the river you can't get to by foot. So you have a great chance of bagging a really big bird. I think you would really enjoy turkey hunting this way. Its fun ,its a little like duck hunting and your on the water. Better then sitting home.

Good morning, Anthony~

Great story! I envy you the opportunity to chase Old Mister Longbeard from afloat. It reminds me of some of my Adirondack deer hunting friends who bring their bucks home in a boat instead of a truck.

I typically have a roost here at the head of what we call Home Pond - but we hunt from terra firma.

Best of luck on Tuesday morning. We'll be "guiding" a new hunter on his first turkey expedition.

Anthony, i do something similar only deer hunting style. I have a 20' deer blind that i scout from, observe the surrounding wood lines and fields, decide where to hunt and set up the next morning and hunt. It is not a slam dunk but works more often than not.
Sitting in a tree in the spring watching the world renew itself is most rewarding.

Thanks for your turkey/duck story.

Bill.

I like your style. I learned many years ago from a old timer. He showed me how to hunt just about anything from my boat or blind. I killed many of deer from my boat. So I know what your saying. Thanks for the nice reply.

Thank you, Wow taking a person on their first turkey hunt. That's great. The first hunt of anything is so rewarding. Good luck with that. I hope he gets the biggest bird. Have fun!

First turkey I killed years ago area I hunted I accessed by boat. Area was originaly a dredge spoil site from late 1800,s that was separated from high ground by mucky forested swamp. Eased in that that morning wearing chest waders and set up where edge of high ground created by spoils met swamp . Turkeys were roosted probably 150 yds from me on forested high ground. About 35 yds across muck between high ground areas. Yelped a few times and 3 toms answered. Called one to edge of opposing high ground and claimed my first long beard. I was actually setting in that muck against a big tree to get that close of a shot. The biggest problem was getting to the bird to bring it home ! Have done similar in that same spot with an 8 pt. buck but that's another story!
