Does anybody know anything about a Grizzly 16" bandsaw model G1538 ? I found out they were built from 1987-1992.

I have two experiences with Grizzly tools.

Bought a table saw 20 years ago. It is a Rockwell clone. Always gave great service.

Borrowed a Grizzly bench sader from a buddy. I stupidly broke a fitting on it. Looked up the schematic on the Grizzly web site & purchased the part on line for less than 10 bucks.

Andy,

I'm not familiar with that model, but based on age, as long as it wasn't abused, It should be a fine saw...like they say, they don't make them like they used to. I've got a mid 90's JET, and although happy with it, I'm not sure weather or not I'd recomend a new one.

Check out the cutting capacity. 16 inch wheels should give plenty on 'throat', but make sure there is at least 8 inches of depth of cut (the measurement from the table to the highest the guard can be raised.

Will the owner let you run the motor? Check out the bearing and tire condition as well. Fire away with more specific questions.

If that's the Grizzly 16"er that looks like a Delta 14" excpet bigger I'd be very leary of it. A friend bought one and it cuts more like a sawzall than a bandsaw. The blade lurches forward every rotation of the warped wheels. Typical Grizzly quality of that era. No quality control. You can't tell the good stuff from the bad. Just have to run it and see. If it were me I'd keep an eye out for a quality US made machine.

Again, if they let you run it, takes alot of guess work out of the choice. I was assuming by recient posts, it would be primarly a decoy cutting machine. Although the sawzall action Eric speaks of wouldn't be desired, it really doesn't take a great machine to cut out decoys, the main thing is that the cutting capacity is high enough to cut your side profile.

I have pretty much decided to pass on it. It is two hours each way to get there. Too much trouble for a test run. I could get by with a 14" saw with a riser anyway.
