Very cold day on the clearwater River in Idaho

Went to my favorite hole on the Clearwater river today. Took my camper and was planning on staying and hunting 2 days. The plan was to shoot a limit of Barrows drakes. Well, I guess I have to post even when I don't fill my bag. At first light I knew something was wrong when the first flock came in and out of 9 birds there was only one drake. Usually its the other way around. I have to think I caught the first of the migration, where mostly hens were moving. I had hen barrows in my decoys all day. Along with some teal and buffleheads. It was a great day in a beautiful setting. I should have brought my fishing rod as the steelhead were rolling all day long in my decoys. I hope you enjoy the pics. It was snowning so kept the camera under wraps most of the day.

Gary,

Nice pictures. Love the Clearwater country, I have done a bit of research and data collection for fisheries issues from Lewiston, up to the Locsha and Selway. Spent all of last October (2008) working in the Lapwai area on steelhead. So nice pictures.

Yes you should have brought the rod for those steelies. I am currently building a 11', 7 weight, switch rod for such.

Nice pictures once again. Even when you don't shoot much I like seeing the pictures of River in your boat.

Awesome pictures gary! Hopefully a few of the barrows will want to swing by my spread tommorow a.m.

Thanks for sharing

Nice job. There is still plenty of season left here. But the ducks are going to need to hurry and get here non the less.

Very nice Gary. I swear, you folks in the West, particularly in the N. West have it made. Beautiful scenery, long seasons, and in a great flyway. Always love your photos.

Looks like a neat place to hunt, dont see many rocks & mountains from the boat down here!

Noticed the same thing with the buffies down here so far, more "hens" than drakes. I think that a lot of these "hens" are young of the year drakes without colors yet. I took a close look at one "hen" I shot and I am convinced it was actually a young drake. A little too big, feet alittle to pinkish and the white spot on the head was diffusing back.

Gary your pictures are great and they inspire me and make me want to get back on my feet sooner than what I should, I envy you brother, with a boat like a estuary and a dog like river no man can ask for anything more.
God Bless
Eddie.

Gary,

Nice pics for sure. While hunting the Clearwater are you often disturbed by jet or drift boats?

My best,

Don

Gary, your photos are just great.

I have trouble with the settings on my d80, Seems like if I jack up the shutter speed, then I get grainy shots, and If i use the more moderate shutter speeds or auto settings, then I get motion.

Keep doing what you do, because it is wonderful to see.

Beautiful pictures.

I think your lack of success was because of your decoys. Though they look great, I didn't see any barrow's decoys!!!

Beautiful Gary! Glad to see you're getting some use out of the goldeneye! River looks in top form. How's her master doing???

God bless you and your family this Christmas! Pat
