Scott: I live in Northwest Indiana right on the southern border of Lake Michigan, about 50 miles or a one hour drive to downtown Chicago. Since July we've had an interesting scenario with a large male black bear who has migrated from Northern Michigan to Indiana. Till now, there hasn't been a confirmed wild black bear sighting in Indiana since 1871. This big guy has been roaming a wooded area on the Michigan/Indiana border, destroyed a honey bee hive farm, hitting trash cans/bird feeders, leaving scat on driveways, and there have been multiple complaints of this bear coming onto residents porches. DNR was hoping the bear would track back north for mating season, and has set up a couple of baited barrel traps without resultant success. DNR is worried about injury to either humans or the bear from a possible encounter, and are hoping to confront and sedate the bear with tranquilizer darts with relocation to Michigan.
