History is before Joe and I was born......like the Egyptians and the early cave people, etc. I even had an uncle who was a cave man..........he sand a lot and was considered the first ROCK STAR! His first reciording was "Cave Baby Lets Get Stoned".

Did you see my post to you down a few threads?

Dave

Ha! I thought about you as I posted that Dave. Is it still history if you LIVED through it? You should come up and be a guest speaker in my class. People could ask you what it was like before fire. Actually, we had a guy from the Swiss Army in last winter who was a specialist in caveman style fire starting. He was amazing. He did the old stick rubbing thing. In about 2 min I bet he had a fire going. He showed the kids how to keep an ember going in a mushroom in your pocket overnight. Neat stuff.

I'll post some answers tomorrow, but I won't have the kids' average until Monday.

ANSWER to the very first question you asked.
? Wanna try my History quiz for this Fri? Heck no. (and I double checked my answer to.)
My average history quiz you ask?
1. what did I do this morning?

2. what did I eat for lunch?

3. when is supper going to be done?

4. what was I thinking about before I thought about supper?

5. Have you seen my __________?

6. where could I have put it?

7. who in the ________ took my __________?

8. is it duckseason yet?

I find this very interesting, especially the questions about Canada. Admittedly I am the product of a rural, public school system, but we never studied stuff about Canada.

I am younger than Dave Parks so this is history to me. :)

Korea:
China supported the north
The US fought with the south
Mash was the TV show: the first couple seasons with Trapper John and Henry Blake are the best.
Who cares if Canadians were involved, but I think they were.
There were no nukes used.

Suez:
Didn't Israel attack Egypt in the 6 day war, but that was in the 1970's not 1956.
Jimmy Carter (the worst US president ever?) won a nobel prize for his work with Israel/Egypt, but I dont think that's what you are looking for.

Here's the textbook answers.

KOREA 1950

1. Post WW II Korea was divided politically. What superpower supported the North?

USSR and CHINA

2. Which supported the South?

USA

3. ***BONUS*** What old TV show was set in the Korean war and revolved around a mobile hospital unit of American doctors?

MASH. None of the kids will get that one I bet.

4. Were any Canadians involved in the Korean War?

Yep. Thousands of guys and three naval destroyers.

5. Were nukes used?

Nope. But they were considered by the US. Ceasefire came in 1953.

SUEZ 1956

6. What country was the Suez Canal in?

Egypt

7. Name two countries that invaded the Suez.

Any of these three gets a mark - Israel, France, Britain. The US was pissed b/c Britain France and Israel did not consult them before taking action. Still, the US promised to help out if the Russians got involved.

Remember that the big 5 on the UN security council were Britain, France, US, USSR and China. They were all supposed to be on the same team, right?

8. Did the UN Security Council support the invasion?

Officially, a resolution was passed to cease the hostilities, which B/F/I ignored.

9. Who offered Egypt money and missiles to defend itself?

USSR

10. Was Canada involved?

Actually yes. Lester Pearson proposed that the UN send in a security force of its own to separate and mediate between the rival armies. "For his efforts in defusing the crisis, Lester Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace prize." He was our Minister of External Affairs at the time.

11. Who got the Nobel Peace Prize for diffusing that situation before it erupted into something terrible?

Lester Pearson. Were there others I don't know about?

CUBA 1959

12. Were any Canadian cities within range of Cuban based missiles?

Yes. Winnipeg, all of S Ontario and Quebec (That's 1/2 of our population right there) New Brunswick, PEI, and Nova Scotia including Halifax. Regina would have been OK I guess.

13. Who was the Russian Premier at the time?

Khrushchev

14. Who was the American President?

JFK

15. Canadian Prime Minister?

Diefenbaker

16. Did Canada support the US in their plans to invade Cuba?

No, instead of fulfilling our obligations to a fellow NORAD member, our PM decided against helping the US invade Cuba. "A later poll showed that 80% of Canadians disagreed with Dief"

17. Were nukes involved in the Cuban Crisis?

Yes ma'am.

NUCLEAR WARHEADS IN CANADA IN THE 60's

18. Who was in favor of having nuclear warheads in Canada?

US obviously, and a few high ranking Canadian politicians.

19. Who didn’t want them here?

Pretty much everyone else who lived in Canada. Why? Some people must have thought it hypocritical to urge the UN to work for disarmament while building up a nukes store here. Others may have thought it a mistake for Cuba to allow USSR to stage its weapons there, thus making it a target of the US. Tough decision really.

20. ***BONUS*** So do we have some here now or not?

As far as I know, no.

VIETNAM 1960's

21. The North was C_____________________.

Communist

22. The South was run by a D____________________.

Dicator

23. Which side did the US support?

South

24. Who helped the other side?

USSR and CHINA

25. What was so special about the Vietnam War?

All the reasons you guys gave would get the mark. What the book was pointing out was that this was the first war ever televised. In hindsight that may have been a major factor in people back in the US loosing faith in the project.

26. In 1973 Richard Nixon pulled US troops out of Southeast Asia. Did that end the Vietnam War?

No

27. Which side won? North or south?

North

28. The people of the loosing side had to flee for their lives. Where did they go?

Malaysia, Hong Kong (Which was a British colony still, right?), and 1000's came to Canada.
