Washington Sheep hunt

My 18 year old son Hunter beat the 1000-1 odds and drew a sheep tag here in Eastern Washington this year, the season opened last Sunday and we located this ram way down in a deep canyon. I had spent 13 days on the mountain looking for and at sheep wanting to make this once in a life time hunt a success.

This ram had never shown himself until opening day, he was fighting with another ram for a ewe, chasing her all over the hillside, after planning the stalk we were able to get 375 yards from him, Hunter got benched in on the bipod and took the ram with one shot that dropped him in his tracks.

Now I can get the boats ready and start the duck season!!

Shermie, Hunter was shooting a Remington model 700 3006 with a KDF muzzlebreak, the gun was given to my wife by my late uncle who was a very avid hunter. I had worked up some handloads with 150 grain Nosler partition bullets,

Hunter has always shot alot and is a very good shot for an 18 year old, we praticed out to 400 yards this summer so he knew what to do when the time came to buckle down and shoot.

gawd after my latest mishap with a 10 pointer and missing at a hundred dont let the army know he can shoot like that you tell him im right proud of him and that awesome sheep to...

shermie...

That's a great sheep. Will you have him scored. He looks heavy and nice full curls. Did you hear the crack of the headbutts? I've always wanted to see/hear that in person.

well congradulations and tell him thanks for drawing this year as all i got is another "preferance point" for sheep and moose lol shows some real dedication and true appretiation for the once in a life time hunts

Now there is a memory that will never fade. Great scouting & lots of preparation go's well with the luck of the draw and the luck of running into this bruiser.....not to mention Hunters skill with his dad's home tuned hand loads. Well desereved results for sure.

Fred, Sutton got to do some long-range shooting with one of my '06's a few years ago on one of our Sage Grouse hunts here in Oregon. Steve did very well and was facinated with what a steady hand and a little coaching could do with the old 'o6 at long 400-500 yard ranges. A great all-around cartridge in the hands of a rifleman.

Dave, in todays world of "super magnums" I have pretty much resisted the urge to build up on of those types of rifles, I have to agree that the "old" -06 is pretty hard to beat with the right loads.

I have seen my share of guys who think that the latest greatest gun will make up for lack of preperation.
