Waterdogs----Just having fun!

Bev and I were sitting by the pond sipping on spritzers and having a ball watching the pups. The four that we have could entertain us all day long with their antics.
This is Salsa, our 6 month old female lab. Pepper's youngster. She thought she was missing out on some fun.

Seconds later, Chili brought me a tennis ball to throw and of course all of them are then totally involved.

Chili feels like a champ being able to get away with the ball.

Time for a drink. Salsa on the left, Pepper in the middle, and Chance on the right.

"Old Squinty Eyes", Chili, in her element with a log between her front paws. My good friend and close neighbor, Joe Lopez, gave Chili that name.

Chili is a true waterdog! She was having so much fun.

Chance, did anyone tell you that a water lilly pad hanging out of your mouth looks dumb?

Chance loves to blow bubbles!

Then he saw one of Bev's goldfish swimming around.

And before you had time to say Jackie Robinson, he stumbled into the pond with this ridiculous expression on his face. I was busy taking pictures while listening to Bev yelling, "Chance, get out of the pond!"

I think I overheard Chili saying, "Life is Good"

Looks like you have quite a circus running around there !

What are the ages ?

Are all of them hunters?

Thank you, Paul. Well, actually it is our cockapoo, Callie, who is the boss at ten years old. She lets all the rest of them know it, too.

Nick,
Chili is 7 years old and has 8 duck seasons under her "belt?"! Pepper is over 3 and as a student of Chili's is also a very good retriever. Chance is almost a year old now and will go hunting this fall. Pepper's youngster, Salsa, is just 6 months old and she will be waiting for a turn this fall, also.

AL,

I did not think of labs when you said "waterdogs", this is what I thought of...the larval form of the tiger salamander....bass bait. It does look like the pups are having fun.

Al,
Great pics of some great dogs. Labs are indeed the best especially yellow ones that everyone knows are smarter (Look out now!!). I like to remind ours that " Today is a good day to be a dog" We have found that 3 dogs is a lot more than 2+1 but how do you posibly handle 4?? Great lil' family there.

Larry,
In 1968, I bought my first house which happened to be in the city of Anchorage, Alaska. They had an ordinance about raising pigeons. Since I had quite a large lot, I found out that the city would allow me to build a pigeon loft exactly 1 foot square. They then gave me 30 days to get rid of them. I made a vow back then that wherever I would go I would live in the country. For the last 46 years I have raised pigeons because I have always lived in the country.
I never let my birds fly, I just enjoyed raising them. I guess one of my neighbors didn't like hearing them coo. He/she much preferred hearing dogs barking all night.

That was a good one, Matt. I forgot about that! Guess I'll just have to say "pup" from now on. I know guys who have used salamanders when fishing in Wisconsin. I knew one guy who built a musky bait to look like a muskrat.

Hi Tom,
There is no way that I'll touch that one statement of yours. Funny as heck, though! My wife, Beverly, decided a couple of years ago that she would like to raise AKC labs, so when I bought Pepper, that is when the thought started. Since then the two of us built this kennel last year, which is 20'x20'. It has five concrete runs in it. with a ten foot by twenty foot space for them to walkabout! It is amazing what two 68 year olds can get done---- Bev walks Pepper, Chance, and Salsa each day. Chili is a one person dog----me. She is with me all day long.

Trip---at this stage of the game in our retirement, we decided to prioritize the dogs since I cut way back on my pigeon hobby. At one time I had two lofts, one which was 40 feet long and I was raising over 500 birds. Now I have about 70 birds. By the way, 15 of those birds belong to Fr. Dennis, a dear friend of mine. He needed a home for his Pensom rollers while he is in transition (being assigned a new parish). The big loft was torn down and the kennel was built using the wood from the old loft. I'll never forget renting a jack hammer and getting rid of that 40' x 10' slab of concrete. All we had to buy was the shade cloth, door hinges, paint, wire, and concrete.

Al,

Given that you are in NM and you named the kennel the "Enchanted Desert Kennels", I assume you have trouble keeping the New Age crystal readers out that kennel.......Shirley MacLaine might show up....

On a much saner note, do the dogs have any trouble with the heat during those toasty NM summers?

Matt

Geez, Matt, you had me second guessing the name of our kennel----Enchanted Desert Labs. I thought with a name like that we might get the majority of our customers out of Los Alamos National Lab and Sandia Labs! Just kidding.
The labs deal with the heat quite nicely. Chili is one of those dogs that even when it is 103F outside she'll bring me a tennis ball!
Al

Al,

I was laughing when I wrote that.......when I think of NM the New Age movement seems to come to mind...

The labs I have owned are not much for 100 degree weather, sort of like their owner. The labs have always been black so maybe that coat just soaks up to much heat.

Matt

On the contrary, Matt, one of the most successful breeds of beef cattle here is the Brangus. Rancher's have also bred a white faced black that will have color around the eyes which helps eliminate the possibility of cancer.
We only have around two weeks of heat and two weeks of cold---other than that, this place is like a Gift from God.
Al

Al,

We get about 2-3 weeks above 90 and maybe 1 or so around 100. The SLC area is warmer then we are. The St George area is hot like Vegas and around Moab is a tad warmish also. The winters are cooler----0-25 below is common and 35 below does happen.

I have angus myself right now, the pasture they are in has a grove of hawthorns and during the hottest weeks they hang around in that grove enjoying the cooler temps. Livestock is a hobby for me, if I could I would have been a rancher (best way to loose money ever invented HAHA).

Matt

Don,
I have to admit that I really like that word you mentioned----"poochanalities". It should be included within Mr. Webster's plethora of words. Glad you liked the shots.
